Catalogue de l'exposition présentée à Evion du 14 juin au 21 septembre 2008. Edition bilingue : français-anglais. Jules Chéret est à juste titre considéré comme l'inventeur de l'affiche moderne. L'ensemble de son immense production (près de 1000 affiches) témoigne d'une créativité exemplaire. Chéret a réussi l'exploit de marier dans ces supports publicitaires qui vantent spectacles, fêtes et produits de toutes sortes, l'esprit et la grâce. Son oeuvre s'étend approximative -ment de 1870 à 1925. A partir de 1895, Jules Chéret s'engage dans une nouvelle voie, celle de la peinture murale. Il va y être amené par l'un de ses plus fidèles admirateurs, le baron Vitta, qui a entrepris de faire décorer sa villa "La Sapinière" à Evian par des artistes contemporains. Chéret en ornera de fresques les murs de la salle de billard. La période des grandes décorations va l'occuper jusqu'en 1907. Parallèlement à son oeuvre de décorateur, Chéret dessine sans relâche s'adonnan à la peinture de chevalet, utilisant le pastel, mais aussi l'huile & la gouache
