Africas : the artist and the city : a journey and an exhibition by Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona( Book )

8 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Africas: The Artist and The City is an exhibition that contains a double affirmation: it corroborates the existence of an "other" urban and artistic reality in Africa; and it asserts that these realities do not correspond with what topics and stereotypes would have us see as Africa's sole reality. In the words of Pep Subiros, we should talk not of Africa, but of Africas. Yet until now, there has been little said about the Africas depicted by this exhibition. Because what, in fact, do we really know about processes of urban change in cities like Dakar, Cape Town, Abidjan or other cities that are undergoing urbanisation and growth at breakneck speed? And what do we know about the work of the artists based in these cities? Very little, it must be said. Africas: The Artist and The City aims to illustrate a moment in which a fertile collision is taking place between tradition and modernity, between the local and the global. And it seeks to introduce us into the settings where this confluence is occurring." "The exhibition Africas: The Artist and the City is one of the chief proposals of the first Barcelona Art Report 2001 which, under the name Experiences, are jointly presented by the Institute of Culture, the MACBA and the CCCB. This makes the vision and reflection proposed by the exhibition on the special moment being experienced by contemporary art in Africa all the more relevant. A vision that is necessary if we want to better understand and grasp what is happening to us ourselves."--Jacket

"With Making Africa - A Continent of Contemporary Design, the Vitra Design Museum sheds new light on contemporary African design. Showcasing the work of over 120 artists and designers, the exhibition illustrates how design accompanies and fuels economic and political change on the continent. Africa is presented as a hub of experimentation generating new approaches and solutions of worldwide relevance - and as a driving force for a new discussion of the potential of design in the twenty-first century."--Publisher description

In the Chinese city : perspectives on the transmutations of an empire by Frederic Edelmann( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 138 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Beijing hosts the summer 2008 Olympic Games, followed by the 2010 Universal Exposition in Shanghai. These two cities have undergone an architectonic and urban metamorphosis without precedent for dimension or speed; a movement which has transformed the whole of China and has deeply affected the lives of hundreds of millions of people. This book presents keys for understanding a phenomenon often blurred by touristic portrayals and issues of economic restlessness. Divided in two parts, the book first illustrates the history of urban China, from its acceleration over the 20th century to its metamorphosis over the last decade. It then explores 8 cities: diverse megalopolises including popular Shanghai and Beijing, famous Suzhou and Xi an, the unknown conurbian between Canton and Shenzhen on the Pearl River, and the emerging Chongqin with the gigantic three Gorges Dam Project."--BOOK JACKET

Magnum Photos and the Cinematheque Francaise sendt 10 photographers to the movies and asked them to create original work in response to the oeuvre of a film director who has influenced their vision. In carrying out the assignment, Abbas, Antoine D'Agata, Bruce Gilden, Harry Gruyaert, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Gilles Peress, Mark Power, Alec Soth, Donovan Wylie and Patrick Zachmann have set out to absorb all the mixed media that differentiates the moving image from their own intensely distilled single frames: Beyond prints, projections and film stills, they consider audio-visual material, written notes, soundtracks, and publications, each in his own way exploring the domain of the visible. Among their subjects: Pinkhassov looks at Andrei Tarkovski, Gruyaert at Michelangelo Antonioni, Abbas at Roberto Rossellini, Power at Krzysztof Kieslowski, Soth at Wim Wenders and Gilden more broadly at film noir from the 40s and 50s
