Plenty of retirees take a holiday. When Brian Rix retired after 36 years as a policeman in Victoria rather than hitching up the caravan, he put his wife, journalist Shirley Hardy-Rix, on the back of his motorcycle and headed off for a ride. For the next 16 months Brian and Shirley rode more than 83,000 kilometres through 32 countries on five continents with side trips to Antarctica and Galapagos Islands. They rode from the bottom of South America to the very top of North America. They rode over the Andes, sometimes more than 5,000 metres high. They rode through deserts, the tropics and up to Ala

Alf Tubbe, Fred Phipps and Flash Harry are three down-and-out bookmakers who are trying to make an honest living on the Turf. After one particularly distressing day, when they owe money to all their clients, the three bookmakers are forced to disappear rather rapidly. Talking over their grim financial state, Alf comes up with a brilliant idea. Cardinal, the French wonder horse, is due to race next week and if they could somehow switch this animal, then they would stand to make a packet. At this very moment, a horse pokes its head over the hedge behind them-they are in business. They have found their switch, the living image of Cardinal. A few days before the race, the three friends set up headquarters in a pub and begin to make preparations. But a series of farcical disasters overtake them and they end up by mislaying their horse. Undeterred, Alf seeks the help of an unscrupulous jockey, and when this plan fails, Fred is ordered to ride Cardinal. Cardinal wins the race, but refuses to stop at the post. Pursued by an ambulance, a fire engine and the police, Fred leads a hectic chase across the countryside. But once it is over, the three unfortunate bookmakers, still owing money on Cardinal's victory, are forced to keep on running
