Berthold Lubetkin : architecture and the tradition of progress by John Allan( Book )

21 editions published between 1992 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Berthold Lubetkin: Architecture and the Tradition of Progress is the definitive account of the life and works of Berthold Lubetkin (1901-1990), Britain's leading Modernist architect. He was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture and he is believed to have more listed buildings to his credit than any other twentieth century architect in Britain. Following a 20-year friendship, author and architect John Allan documents unpublished drawings, photographs, and extracts of writing in this richly illustrated study. Allan sets Lubetkin's work in the wider historical, social and political environment of the time. From Lubetkin's early work in Paris in the 1920s, when he was acquainted with renowned architects such as August Perret and Le Corbusier through to the work of his practice Tecton, the book provides a comprehensive account of his landmark buildings for London Zoo, Finsbury Borough Council and the famous Highpoint apartments. His post-war work, including the troubled project to build Peterlee New Town, is also fully covered. Originally published in 1992 by RIBA Publications, this updated and comprehensive study is an essential book for students of architecture and the modern period, practitioners of architecture and design alike, as well as anyone with an interest in one of the great figures in twentieth century architecture

Report of the Independent Power Producers Review Panel by British Columbia( Book )

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Summarizes findings of a review panel given the tasks of comparing the social costs of five short-listed independent power producer proposals originating in response to a request for proposals from BC Hydro in 1994. Begins with background on the BC Hydro request and a description of the five proposals, including two cogeneration projects at pulp mills and three small hydroelectric projects. This is followed by description of BC Hydro's own least-cost project for new energy supply, a repowering of the Burrard thermal plant. Chapter two discusses various methodological issues in the comparison, including Vancouver Island transmission credits, the social costing framework used, and the manner in which environmental costs and benefits are evaluated. The five proposals are ranked in relationship to that least-cost project and issues of project sequencing and premium price determination are discussed in chapter three. The premium price is that which is necessary to support BC Hydro acquisition of electricity from any project with lower social costs but higher corporate costs than BC Hydro's least-cost alternative. Concludes with recommendations based on the findings regarding the preferred project

West Country households, 1500-1700( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the last forty years, South-West England has been the focus of some of the most significant work on the early modern house and household in Britain. Its remarkable wealth of vernacular buildings has been the object of much attention, while the area has also seen productive excavations of early modern household goods, shedding new light on domestic history. This collection of papers, written by many of the leading specialists in these fields, presents a number of essays summarizing the overall understanding of particular themes and places, alongside case studies which publish some of the most remarkable discoveries. They include the extraordinary survival of wall-hangings in a South Devon farm, the discovery of painted rooms in an Elizabethan town house, and a study of a table-setting mirrored on its ceiling. Also considered are forms of decoration which seem specific to particular areas of the West Country houses. Taken together, the papers offer a holistic view of the household in the early modern period. John Allan is Consultant Archaeologist to the Dean et Chapter of Exeter Cathedral; Nat Alcock is Emeritus Reader in the Department of Chemistry, University of Warwick; David Dawson is an independent archaeologist and museum and heritage consultant. Conceptual alternatives for a release facility at Kenney Dam : an interim report by Kenney Dam Release Facility Working Group( Book )

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In January 1995, the British Columbia government announced its decision to reject the Kemano Completion Project of Alcan Aluminium Ltd. (Alcan). The province and Alcan then formed various working groups to explore solutions to handle the consequences of the decision. This document is the interim report of the group formed to examine and analyse the environmental and technical aspects, benefits, and costs of a release facility and related auxiliary works at the Kenney Dam. This facility as designed for the purpose of protection and conservation of fish resources in the context of the reduced flows which would have been released into the Nechako River under the Completion Project, not in the context of larger flows which will continue to be released as a result of the Project's cancellation. The report outlines various alternative conceptual layouts for a Kenney Dam release facility and provides a general discussion of these alternatives. After outlining a framework in which a cost-benefit analysis could be undertaken, if appropriate, the report draws preliminary conclusions regarding the alternatives
