Erzählt wird die Geschichte von Recha, der vermeintlichen Tochter Nathans, ein jüdischer Kaufman im Jerusalem von 1192. Kurz bevor Nathan von einer Geschäftsreise zurückkehrt, brennt sein Haus nieder und Recha wird von einem christlichen Tempelritter gerettet. Recha verliebt sich in ihren Retter, welcher als Kreuzritter Juden gegenüber kritisch eingestellt ist. Ein zweiter Schauplatz ist das Verhältnis von Nathan zu Sultan Saladin, der immer in Geldnöten steckt und auf den Juden Nathan angewiesen ist. Die Autorin bietet in ihrem Roman mehr als nur die Erzählung der Religionsproblematik mit der berühmten Ringparabel: Sie zeichnet weitere interessante Personen, welche sich immer wieder bei der Betrachtung des Geschehenen abwechseln und so einen spannenden Einblick in das Leben jener Zeit vermitteln.
