Trama: Norimberga 1828. Un giovane uomo dai tratti grossolani, sporco e lacero nelle vesti, vive da anni rinchiuso in una cantina: è in uno stato di totale abbandono, ignaro del mondo esterno alla sua prigione, incapace persino di esprimersi nel più primitivo dei modi. Alle sue esigenze primarie provvede uno sconosciuto: un giorno, all'alba, costui decide di liberare il giovane prigioniero e, dopo avergli insegnato a pronunciare qualche vocabolo e a scarabocchiare il suo nome, lo abbandona nella piazza principale della città con una lettera in mano. Rinchiuso dalle autorità nella prigione cittadina, Kaspar Hauser (questo il nome del ragazzo scritto nella lettera) viene accolto affettuosamente dai membri della famiglia della guardia carceraria grazie ai quali impara le più elementari nozioni del vivere civile nonché a parlare. Il consiglio comunale, tuttavia, decide che Kaspar paghi per il suo sostentamento e lo manda a esibirsi in un circo insieme ad altri fenomeni come un bambino spacciato per il giovane Mozart, un nano fatto passare per il re di Lilliput e un indiano delle Ande peruviane. Stanco della prigionia, Kaspar fugge e si rifugia presso il professor Daumer che, oltre a perfezionare la sua educazione insegnandogli a scrivere e a suonare il piano, lo circonda di comprensione e di affetto aiutato dalla governante Kathe. In casa di Daumer Kaspar viene a contatto tanto con esponenti della chiesa, quanto con scienziati e filosofi illustri, infine con nobili e notabili: in tutti i casi il giovane riesce, attraverso una propria personalissima logica implacabile a confutare le affermazioni dei propri interlocutori, per lo meno, a smascherarne la convenzionalità e il carattere dogmatico
