Agile! : the good, the hype and the ugly by Bertrand Meyer-Stabley( )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a review of agile principles, techniques and tools, and offers an analysis of their benefits and limitations. It begins with a review of classical software engineering techniques, such as requirements analysis and lifecycle models, which agile methods criticize, and then discusses agile principles, roles, managerial practices, technical practices and artifacts. It analyzes the four major agile methods: Extreme Programming, Lean Software, Scrum, and Crystal. Finally, the book describes the precautions that a company should take during a transition to agile development and presents an overall assessment of agile ideas. This book provides a key resource for projects that combine the best of established results and agile innovations. --

SEAFOOD for Thought Headline-grabbing though it may be, the software industry’s large-scale allo- tion of work to developing countries has not so far generated much technical analysis. Attention is usually limited to the possible political and economic c- sequences, in particular the fears of loss of employment in the West. The aim of the present volume is di?erent. We recognize that o?shore development is here to stay, and not just a result of cost considerations. It is – more accurately – a form of distributed development, relying on advances in communications to let the software industry, in our globalizedworld, bene?t from the wide distribution of human talent. But it is also the source of a new set of challenges, to which accepted software engineering principles and techniques have not completely prepared us. Producing high-quality software on time and within budget is hard enough when the QA team is across the aisle from the core developers, and the customers across the street; what then when the bulk of the development team is across an ocean or two? The ?rst SEAFOOD – Software Engineering Advances For Outsourced and 1 O?shore Development – conference (prompted by an earlier article ) was an - tempt not only to bring software engineering to outsourcing but also to bring outsourcing into the collective consciousness of the software engineering c- munity. This is bene?cial to both sides: successful outsourcing requires strong softwareengineering guidance, but researchin the ?eld must for its part account forthenewworldofsoftwaredevelopment

Marie Laurencin by Bertrand Meyer-Stabley( Book )

Touch of class : learning to program well with objects and contracts by Bertrand Meyer( )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 41 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From object technology pioneer, Design by Contract inventor and ETH Zurich professor Bertrand Meyer, winner of ACM Software System Award, the Dahl-Nygaard prize and the Jolt award, Touch of Class is a revolutionary introductory programming textbook that makes learning programming fun and rewarding. Instead of the traditional low-level examples, Meyer builds his presentation on a rich object-oriented software system supporting graphics and multimedia, which students can use to produce impressive applications from day one, then explore "from the outside in" as they learn new programming techniques. Unique to Touch of Class is the combination of a practical, hands-on approach with sound theory. Throughout the presentation of software concepts, the book relies on the principles of Design by Contract, critical to software quality and providing a gentle introduction to formal methods. The coverage is notable in both its depth and its breadth. In addition to core programming concepts such as control structures, algorithms and fundamental data structures, it encompasses recursion (including theory and implementation), reference and pointer manipulation, inheritance and associated techniques of polymorphism and dynamic binding, topological sort as an example of algorithm and API design, syntax description techniques, important design patterns such as Observer and Visitor, event-driven programming, high-level function closures (including an introduction to lambda calculus) and software tools. The final chapter is a detailed introduction to the challenges and techniques of software engineering, from lifecycle models to requirements analysis. The use of full color brings exciting programming concepts to life. Touch of Class gives students the leading edge by teaching both the fundamental techniques of programming and the professional-level skills preparing them for the challenges of modern software engineering
