The race for the South Pole takes shape in 1907. While Scott's expedition is based in New Zealand awaiting to shipoff to Antarctica there is trouble already in the ranks, with problems occurring with the horses. Once at sea the Terra Nova encounters pack ice which delays their journey. Amundsen, meanwhile, is making quicker progress. When the British stumble across the Norwegian ship, there is a guarded exchange of greetings before the two teams set off across the ice flows toward the South Pole

When Scott goes to Norway for the trials of his revolutionary motorised sledges, Nansen offers him sound advice on dogs, clothing, food, and above all, skis. Most of it falls on dead ears. When Scott's ship leaves England, it is to cheers from the crowd and riotous acclaim in the British press. Meanwhile, Amundsen, having kept his destination a closely guarded secret, makes a quiet departure from Norway. When he docks at Madeira to take on fresh provisions he at last reveals his true intentions to his men and asks for their support

Captain Scott is growing restless in the face of growing dissent amongst the ranks. Amundsen too is experiencing problems with his team and also with the weather conditions. Amundsen sets off to make his final assault, but is forced to admit failure and returns to camp when the weather is just too harsh to continue. Finally the conditions improve and Amundsen sets out once more

Amundsen is left to reflect that although he has captured the Pole it is the heroic and yet tragic attempt by Scott that has captured the glory
