Papers and still images by Alan Hyman( )
in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Papers and still images pertaining to the service of Alan Hyman, a Madison, Wisconsin, resident who served in E Troop, 93rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 13th Armored Division during World War II. Papers and still images are separated into two series: military service and veterans materials. Military service materials include: letters to his parents and siblings, V-mail to his family, letters to Hyman, memorabilia and photographs. Letters sent home during his service cover his time training in California and Texas. These letters describe life in basic training, Hyman's thoughts toward the military and fellow servicemen and cover his time on and off base. In a few of the letters, Hyman mentions getting special leave for Jewish holidays. Of interest in Hyman's letters from California is one dated September 30-31, 1943. The letter describes to his parents his trip to Los Angeles, meeting several celebrities and dancing with two movie stars. This letter is accompanied by an article on Bob Hope, with a joke about a serviceman who danced with those two movie stars, and autographs of several celebrities from the time. The autographs and article are located in Souvenirs-Autographs (B2, F8), while the letter is arranged with the rest of the correspondence. Other correspondence from training include many stories about abysmal conditions while training for various circumstances and an illness that hospitalized Hyman for over a month. Letters to Hyman include notes and letters from several girls during his time training. Miscellaneous correspondence includes a letter from Hyman's father on his 19th birthday while he was hospitalized, postcards and telegrams from Hyman to his parents, and letters from family in Minnesota sent to Hyman's family. Letters are arranged by date and recipient. Some letters have exact dates and are arranged by that date, while others are grouped by year, using information provided by the donor. Papers from his time in active duty include accounts of life overseas, his travels, and as much detail as he can provide about his activities in Europe. After censorship stops (May 15, 1945), Hyman is able to tell his parents his thoughts on war and conditions in Europe, including prisoners of war and his trip to Hitler's birthplace (May 27,1945). Hyman also collected several manuscript souvenirs from Hitler and Goering's homes before they were destroyed, they are arranged in (B2, F9). Included in this folder are several newsclippings about Hitler's birthplace and the Allied presence there. Newsclippings from his service provide information about the possibility of his division being sent to the Pacific Theater after the war in the European Theater had ceased, and several cartoons commenting on the life of a soldier. Photographs from his military service include several that Hyman sent to his parents before he was sent overseas, photographs of Hyman and others during his service. Materials from Hyman's life as a veteran focus mainly on his involvement in the 93rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron association. These materials include bi-monthly newsletters from leaders of the organization, updating members on the activities and health of members and information on reunions. Other materials include programs and registrations for reunions and membership materials for Hyman. Other veterans materials include cards from other veterans and a thank-you card from a student who interviewed Hyman and presented on him and some of his memorabilia for a school project. Included in Hyman's veteran materials are several folders of research materials. One folder is devoted to memorials and personal recognition, including a copy of a speech he gave at Edgewood College's Holocaust remembrance play. Other research materials cover the activities of the 13th Armored Division and the 93rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron during World War II. A final file is devoted to the stories of veterans. Several newsclippings relay the importance of these stories and how letters sent during war time can illustrate the life of a soldier. Photographs from his time as a veteran are from the Chicago reunion in 1990
