"Forty works by early Netherlandish masters from van Eyck to Bosch--reproduced in exquisite detail--are the subject of this breathtaking book that leads readers deep into the paintings to reveal each artist's astonishing technique and brilliant application of color. The longer we gaze at the paintings of the old masters, the more we appreciate the subtlety and artistry of the painters who created them. This beautiful book offers readers an opportunity to learn and study the art of Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and many other masters of this period and region. It also explores their influence on later artists from the Baroque period. Each of the works is briefly presented along with its historical and contextual background and importance. Then in a series of full-page illustrations, specific details are enlarged to guide the reader carefully and thoughtfully through the piece's nuances and often overlooked features. The result is the next best thing to a private viewing at a museum--a truly sensuous and emotional experience that will engage both the novice and the expert. Till-Holger Borchert's texts are informative and engaging as he shares his singular passion for these great works in a magnificent book that will inspire viewers to form their own opinions and exercise their own powers of observation within the context of this important period in art history." -- Publisher's description

Late Medieval panel paintings : materials, methods, meanings by Susie Nash( Book )

9 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is an exemplary investigation of a series of, so far, poorly documented works that will prove of great interest to those in the field. Most of the 15th- or early 16th-century panel paintings presented here are northern European, a large number German, which have been neglected in English language studies. They are all almost unknown, and certainly none of them have been subjected to modern techniques of investigation - infrared, x-ray, micro-photography - until now.0Exhibition: Sam Fogg, New York

"The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is home to one of the world's most important collections of early Netherlandish painting. The origin of those rich holdings can be traced back to 1477, when the Burgundian Netherlands became a Habsburg possession on Mary of Burgundy's marriage to Archduke Maximilian of Austria. Imperial Treasures. Masterpieces from the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna is the fruit of the outstanding exhibition of the same name at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges. The book is devoted to a unique selection of fifteenth and sixteenth-century masterpieces from the Low Countries in the museum's collection. In a series of essays by leading scholars, it explores the history of the collection and the emergence of the various pictorial genres. The exceptionally early development of history, portrait, landscape and genre painting in the Low Countries laid the foundations for the unprecedented flowering of both Flemish and Dutch painting in the seventeenth century."--Publisher's website

The exhibition "Jan van Eyck. Grisaille" presents an overview of selected works in grisaille, a technique which experienced its heyday in the 14th and 15th centuries and was highly popular in the Netherlands. Among the great master who practised the art of grisailles was Jan van Eyck. His famous "Annuciation Diptych" owned by the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum constitutes the focal point of this exhibition. This exhibition aims to underscore the popularity and importance that the grisaille phenomenon acquired in the 14th and 15th centuries. For this reason the project offers an overview of carefully selected pieces excecuted in black and white and using very different techniques and media. It brings together examples from a variety of disciplines and explores the origin, acceptance and progess of grisaille in this period
