The Preface examines the evolution of French nineteenth-century landscape from its origins in the academic classical tradition to its assimilation of attributes derived from the Dutch seventeenth-century and the English landscapists, particularly John Constable. The artists of the Barbizon School, particularly Camille Corot and Charles-Francois Daubigny, are discussed in their roles as proponents of Naturalism and immediate precursors of the generation to which Vollon and the Impressionists belonged. From plein-air work in front of the motif, a practice indigenous to landscape painting, even at its earliest classical phase, emerged a stylistic diversity and a painterliness of technique which acted as a stimulus for innovation. The quality of experimentation and freedom of execution evident in Vollon's landscapes reflect the impetus of this expansive aesthetic
