Issu d'une famille de notables de Tourcoing, Albert Roussel (1869-1937) décida de sa carrière de marin à la lecture des aven-tures de Jules Verne. Mais sa santé fragile s'accommoda mal du rude métier de la mer et sa passion pour la musique le rattrapa dès 1894. Il partit à Paris pour se perfectionner avec d'Indy à la Schola Cantorum où il finit par enseigner de 1902 à 1913, puis continua avec des cours privés. L'impression-nante liste de ses élèves compte notamment Satie, Varèse, Martinu, Le Flem ou Martinon. A la suite de Debussy, Roussel développa des couleurs originales et envoûtantes, parfois influencées par ses longs voyages comme celui de ses noces en Inde (qui inspira son opéra-ballet Padmâvatî). Ses ballets (Le Festin de l'araignée, Bacchus et Ariane et Aeneas) lui ont apporté la gloire, au côté de ses mélodies et opéras, sa musique de chambre, ses diverses pièces pour piano, deux concertos (pour piano et pour violoncelle), et ses quatre symphonies, dont la Troisième peut être considérée comme l'un des chefs-d'œuvre du genre.
