"It is a wartime story [1943] that is both a character study and a mesmerizing cat and mouse game between a Polish Catholic farmer and a Jewish woman who has escaped a train bound for the Nazi death camps. Set in Silesia during WWII, the drama unfolds with the concealment of the woman by the wealthy, sexually repressed farmer, and moves through various stages of power and powerlessness on both sides. The battle between the two is dispassionate yet haunting in its portrayal of this ill-fated relationship."--Blurb

She doesn't know it but she has already met Helmut Salomon, her future husband, whom she expects to be the source of her individual and sexual fulfillment. After marriage however, Helmut, with chilling inscrutability, subjects her to constant physical and psychological tortures. Martha is an unrelenting depiction of the methodical way a bourgeois male reduces his wife to a state of absolute subjection, in accordance with Fassbinder's belief that marriage was the only socially accepted form of a completely sadomasochistic relationship

Hedda Gabler Schauspiel by Henrik Ibsen ( Visual )
3 editions published between 1974 and 1993 in German and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Zuckmayer wrote his play about Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt (1849-1922) an impostor who masqueraded as a Prussian military officer in 1906 and became famous as The Captain of Köpenick. Voigt is seen as a folk hero and victim of official prejudice. He had been released from prison for forgery and theft and was caught in the kafkaesque situation of not getting work without a residence permit, while not being able to have a residence permit without work. Gaining "respect" in the uniform of a military officer was his response
