"The cave" ("Die Höhle") ist "ein Musiktheater auf der Basis dokumentarischer Quellen, die auf Video aufgenommen wurden. Der Gedanke war, dass man Menschen hören und sehen kann, die auf einem Videofilm sprechen und gleichzeitig Musiker hören und sehen kann, die diese auf der Bühne "doppeln" - oder besser gesagt, ihre Sprachmelodien nachmachen" (Steve Reich). Ausgehend von der Person Abrahams und der Höhle von Machpelah in Hebron äussern sich Israelis, Araber und Amerikaner zu Fragen wie "Wer ist Abraham/Ibrahim?", "Wer ist Hagar?"

Die Textzeile "Schon der kleinste Gedanke genügt, um ein Leben zu erfüllen" von Ludwig Wittgenstein aus "Kultur und Wert" von 1946 besteht in der englischen Übersetzung aus lauer einsilbig erklingenden Wörtern; ("How small a thought it takes to fill a whole life"). Die Soprane singen ihren Part mit je einer Note pro Silbe, die Tenöre tragen lange Melismen auf einer einzigen Silbe vor. Nach einer a-capella-Einleitung doppeln die beiden elektrischen Orgeln durchgehend die Singstimmen und liefern die ergänzenden Harmonien; später setzt das Schlagwerk ein und artikuliert die Verlagerungen in den zwei- und dreizeitigen Rhythmen der Singstimmen

"City Life" verbindet Instrumentalklänge mit Umweltgeräuschen wie Autohupen, knallende Türen, Bremsgeräusche, Signalhörner und Sirenen sowie Sprachfetzen und Satzfragmenten zu einem Klangporträt der Stadt New York. Die Geräusche werden im Gegensatz zu früheren Werken des Komponisten nicht vom Tonband zugespielt sondern erklingen live ab Sampling-Keboards, was eine flexiblere Integration der gespeicherten Klänge erlaubt. Oft werden passende Instrumente zur Dopplung von Umweltgeräuschen eingesetzt: Holzblasinstrumente für Autohupen und Schiffshörner, Schlaginstrumente für knallende Autotüren. Wie oft bei Steve Reich sind die Sätze in einer symmetrischen A-B-C-B-A-Abfolge von Sätzen mit ähnlichen Tempi und vergleichbarem Charakter angelegt
