Cluysenaar bemoans the decadent state of architecture in Belgium, the government spending money only on railways and fortifications; an architectural high school was needed in Brussels; comments on the commercial redevelopment of Anvers, the residential sprawl of Brussels and the fiasco of the Palace of Justice competition; send news of other honorary members of the RIBA and criticises recent buildings in Paris, including the Opera House which he describes as `a Savoie cake'. Also with a letter by Alfred Cluysenaar, son of Jean Pierre, informing the Institute of the death of his father, 16 February 1880
