Thomas Mann, Bertold Brecht, Arnold Schönberg, Lion Feuchtwanger, Fritz Lang, Peter Lorre, Max Reinhardt, Marlene Dietrich - sie und viele andere waren in den 1930er und frühen 1940er Jahren nach Kalifornien geflohen. Die Architekten gingen nach Chicago, die Künstler blieben eher in New York, für Schriftsteller und Musiker war Los Angeles das Ziel. Das Feuer einer neuen, modernen Ästhetik war mit diesen Emigranten in Los Angeles eingezogen und hatte es schnell zu einer der kulturellen Hauptstädte der Welt gemacht. Heute gibt es in Los Angeles nur noch wenige Spuren dieser geistig blühenden Gemeinschaft. Der Film verfolgt die Spuren der deutschen Emigranten in Los Angeles. [3sat]
