One day, Mukai Buhei, a movie director and an actor, spits blood in the middle of his love affair with an actress. Although he has cancer, his friend Dr. Ogata diagnoses his illness as a stomach ulcer. After having surgery, Buhei comes back to work to finish his latest movie which features a conductor who is facing terminal cancer. But soon Buhei collapses. Buhei's condition is getting worse, and the fear of cancer leads him to attempt suicide. But once Ogata informs Buhei of his illness, Buhei decides to accept his fate, and rather than depending on a life-support system in the hospital, he chooses to finish his last film

At the core of this slightly melancholy comedy is a free form chronicle of the ceremonies attending a family funeral following the death of the actor-narrator's father-in-law. Everything is presented in relation to ritual often laced with mild farce. Itami has commented that funerals are the now little understood rituals whereby old Japan connects with modern Japan. He also seems to be invoking the traditional Japanese film genre shomin-geki (home drama) - favoured by Ozu's favourite actor Chisu Ryu, who plays an elderly priest
