Locked away in an asylum for a decade and teetering between life and death, the criminal mastermind Dr. Mabuse has scribbled his last will and testament: a manifesto establishing a future empire of crime. When the document's nefarious writings start leading to terrifying parallels in reality, it's up to Berlin's star detective, Inspector Lohmann, to connect the fragmented, maddening clues in a case unlike any other. The Testament of Dr. Mabuse appropriates slogans and ideas from the newly ascendant Nazi party and puts them into the mouth of a madman, warning the audience of the horrible menace that was rapidly becoming a reality

"Mobilized Germany's most talented artists ... to re-create the true story of a Prussian town's rebellion against Napoleon's army of occupation. Laced with anti-Christian symbolism and National Socialist ideology, the film is a mirror of Hitler Germany's own war for survival. In its characterization of Kolberg's besieged citizenry, the epic allegorically reflects the spirit of fanatical resolve to fight on, that Nazi propaganda was attempting to instill in the German population during the final years of World War II"--Container

Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse by Fritz Lang( Visual )

5 editions published between 1932 and 1997 in German and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lang's final film before fleeing Germany for the US (without his wife Thea Von Harbou, who co-scripted the film and subsequently joined the Nazi party) reprises the character of the master criminal he had created for his famous two-part 'Dr Mabuse, der Spieler'. The film picks up where the original left off, with Mabuse confined to an insane asylum where he uses his hypnotic powers over others, and the asylum director as the agent of those powers, to carry out his master plan to destroy the state. While engineering a series of criminal and chaotic acts that rocks Berlin, the asylum director manages to lead a double life, retaining his position at the asylum. Made during the Nazi party's rise to power, the film captures a political atmosphere of dread, nihilism and individual impotence and although Lang later characterized it as an explicit anti-Nazi parable, its meanings are more general and its points of comparison not exact. Nevertheless, it was banned and nearly destroyed by the Nazis
