Carefree California : Cliff May and the romance of the ranch house by Jocelyn Gibbs( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This landmark volume is an authoritative, richly illustrated examination of the origins, evolution, and influence of the California ranch house. Carefree California looks at a legendary figure in Southern California design, Cliff May, and the ubiquitous domestic icon his name evokes, the ranch house. We also see how other architects--from George Washington Smith to Rudolph Schindler--pursued different paths toward the same kind of relaxed domesticity exemplified by the ranch house. By the late '50s, much of the world was fascinated with California living and with the ranch house in particular, which derived from architects' evocation and reworking of distinctive regional traditions, allied with the pervasive romance and myths of the California frontier, and from the cultivation of a domestic architecture that could serve distinctively Californian ways of carefree living. By uncovering patterns for living that suited the automobile age among the almost archaic forms and rhythms of mission and pioneer dwellings, an extraordinary range of modernism emerged that was at once grounded in history and soaring into the space age."--Publisher's website
700 Nimes Road by Catherine Opie( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Expanding her range of subjects further is Catherine Opie's ambitious recent series of photographs taken at the home of late movie star Elizabeth Taylor. Though glamour and celebrity are not common themes in her work, Opie was inspired by the possibilities this project offered-recalling William Eggleston's series on Elvis Presley's Graceland, or her own photographs of Obama's 2008 inauguration, both of which represent indirect portraits of their subjects. The images in this moving collection were culled from photos Opie took over the course of six months, both on the grounds of and inside Taylor's home. The subjects are wildly diverse-a dog-eared remote control manual, close-ups of Taylor's enormous closets, shelves of tchotchkes and priceless works of art-telling more about Taylor's life than any celebrity portrait ever could. Through Opie's thoughtful curation, Taylor's home tells a poignant story and reveals the arc of a fascinating life

Liz Larner by Liz Larner( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Published to coincide with her solo exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum, this catalogue surveys over five years of Los Angeles?based artist Liz Larner's (born 1960) wall-based ceramic works. Larner?s process explores the natural compression and fragmentation of the body and of ceramic forms themselves. Fired and coated with pigment and resin, each ceramic work fits into one of six categories: inflexion, caesura, subduction, mantle, passage and calefaction. Resembling magnificently colored ancient tablets or sculptural specimens of the mineral world, the pieces have fissures and cracks that evoke geological processes. 00With a photo-essay by Catherine Opie, an essay by curator and writer Jenelle Porter, and an interview between Larner and Aspen Art Museum Director Heidi Zuckerman, this is an accessible entry into the work of an eminent female artist whose practice continues to radically enliven contemporary sculpture

Overspilling world : the photographs of Janet Sternburg by Janet Sternburg( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Can a still photograph embody living perception? Can it contain its abundance? Can photography, which is not a time-based medium, render ongoing flow? Can it do justice to this notion of an over-spilling world? To these questions, photographer Janet Sternburg (b. Boston, 1943; lives and works in Los Angeles and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico), a writer and philosopher as well as a photographer, says yes. Her work proves that photography can register the living perception that is our experience. Working without any optical or digital manipulation, and using the simplest of technical means-disposable and early iPhone cameras-she draws together the manifold aspects of the world on a single plane, portraying a vision of interpenetrating and layered time and space. 'Overspilling World' is Janet Sternburg's first monograph. With texts by Sternburg, art historian Pepe Karmel, photographer Catherine Opie, curator Alexandra von Stosch, and filmmaker-photographer Wim Wenders
