This is the hard and shocking story of life in a British Borstal for young offenders. The brutal regime made no attempt to reform or improve the inmates and actively encouraged a power struggle between the 'tough' new inmate and the 'old hands'. The film was originally made as a BBC play but it was banned before ever being shown. So 'Alan Clarke' and 'Roy Minton' got it re-made as a film. This is a tough and brutal film and should not be viewed lightly

Trevor is a violent, racist skinhead who refuses to cooperate with any attempts by the courts or social workers to rehabilitate him. He is a bright boy who sees himself as the victim of authoritarianism and believes he can beat the system with belligerence and defiance. His forthright but confused sense of pride in his white heritage is a personification of the dark underbelly of 1980s Britain. Intelligent and articulate, Trevor is smart enough to understand the trap of crime, prison, and poverty he's walking into but too angry to care. Obnoxious though Trevor undoubtedly is, behind his aggressive façade are glimpses of a desperate individual, and it becomes hard not to pity him

Elephant: Virtually silent, this film is a study of "the elephant in the room" that was the Troubles, the decades long siege of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. A man walks into a health club, around a pool, and down a hall. There is a tremendous noise, and he walks further down the hall and out the door to the street. A dead man lies in a cubicle. Who's killing whom? Perhaps the next scene will shed some light, help unfold a narrative. No luck. The killings go on and on and on ruthlessly: no meaning, rhyme, nor reason. Following the assassins closely, or focusing on the victims, viewers are forced, are compelled, to witness the grimy, gritty details of murders that occur without a word being spoken. Killings free from Hollywood gloss or moralizing make the viewer want one thing: for them to stop

"Featuring early roles for Tim Roth and Jim Broadbent, the films form a scathing portrait of British society in the early 1980s, focusing in particular on the polarisation of attitudes towards the role and methods of education in an increasingly fragmented society. Without overtly offering solutions, Leland's films depict - often with unnerving acuity and foresight - the experience of individuals within systems that have become inadequate in dealing with the fallout of social breakdown. Of the four films presented here, Made in Britain, directed by the celebrated Alan Clarke, inevitably aroused the strongest controversy, with Tim Roth's astonishing portrayal of a nihilistic, racist teenage skinhead captured by Chris Menges' innovative cinematography"--Original box
