A wealthy Milanese industrialist's jealousy of his wife's past unwittingly reawakens a relationship which goes back to her schooldays. Guilt and fear drive the lovers to plan the industrialist's murder. Antonioni uses the crime genre (thematically the film has connections with American film noir) not for suspense but to explore the morals and psychology of the characters. The woman has married into the wealth of the nouveau riche, her lover is dissatisfied with his poverty. Although this is his first feature Antonioni is already interested in the long take; Noel Burch describes the film's composition as virtually balletic, a ballet by disjunction
