Regarding him almost as a saint, Orgon plans to force his daughter to marry him, while disinheriting his son in his favor. Orgon's friends and family regard Tartuffe as a con man, but Orgon is deaf to their warnings. Then he overhears Tartuffe trying to seduce his wife, and orders Tartuffe to depart. In revenge, Tartuffe seeks to seize Orgon's property and have him arrested. In the end the King intervenes, Tartuffe is arrested, and harmony is restored. Highly controversial for addressing the issue of religious hypocrisy, the play was twice suppressed before permission was given to perform it freely.
