Visionary cities by Winy Maas( Book )

8 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Visionary cities" sets the agenda for the city of the future. This first publication in the "Future Cities Series" is intended as an overview of the issues that The Why Factory is addressing and to outline this research institute's ambitions and modus operandi for the coming years. In each of the book's chapters, whether about sustainability, the boom in the leisure industry or poverty, one encounters the tension between the disciplines of architecture and urbanism and the dynamics of the city itself. Each chapter is therefore a specific brief, an urgent call for visionary scenarios for the city of the future. In the concluding chapter Winy Maas advocates regarding the city first and foremost as a project for the future. Maas takes a critical standpoint vis-à-vis current urban planning practice. He argues that architecture possesses a visionary dimension that can generate new value of the city and advocates a large-scale communal agenda
Space fighter : the evolutionary city (game:) by MVRDV (Firm)( Book )

6 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How do concentrations and settlements 'move'? How do they mutate and/or adapt to this continuous change? What is the struggle, the driving force, behind this? Maybe a process-oriented, 'Darwinist' or evolutionary attitude can be followed towards change and creation, one that models these 'battles', these acts of ascending survival mechanisms. SpaceFighter (the game) wants to model these interactive urban developments. It wants to reflect and compare (in one second or one minute) imaginable interactive urban processes. SpaceFighter has been constructed by Winy Maas in collaboration with the Delft School of Design and the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam

Hong Kong fantasies : challenging world-class city standards by Winy Maas( Book )

6 editions published in 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The 'Why factory' throws down the gauntlet to the city of Hong Kong. What role will Hong Kong be fulfilling in the future? Which specialism should the city focus on in the trial of strength with other cities, such as Shenzhen, Shanghai and Singapore? What objectives need to be set? What are the ingredients that would be appropriate? Can Hong Kong deploy its relatively high quality to develop itself further? And if so, then how? "Hong Kong fantasies" plots out alternative paths, new visions and strategies for Hong Kong's urban and architectonic future. Sustainability and globalization play a leading role in specific spatial interventions that underpin progressive developements in the future
City shock : [planning the unexpected] by Maas( Book )

6 editions published in 2012 in English and Dutch and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a world where forecasting seems futile, where predictions are unreliable, and where even the most absurd scenarios are plausible, many urban planning decisions seem to be governed not by vision - but by fear. Fear of disaster, fear of change, fear of the unknown. Can we learn from 'fear'? Can we even use it as a guide for spatial planning? 'City Shock' explores ten innocent 'what ifs'. What kinds of radical trend breaks can we expect, and with what effects? Guided by fantasy rather than science, this book imagines how each of these scenarios could play out in the Dutch landscape between 2018 and 2047. In a narrative composed of (im)possible headlines, a chain of fictitious newspaper spreads reports these events, exposes their possible causes and depicts their potential consequences for Dutch spatial planning and lifestyle

5 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and Dutch and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Glass Farm makes for an arresting sight on the market square in the Dutch town of Schijndel. Just as fascinating is the history of how the building came into being. This book tells the story of Winy Maas, who at age 18 asked the mayor to do something with the empty space that had been left in Schijndel's market square since Operation Market Garden bombing in 1944. It took 33 years for the building to be erected. The chronicle of the Glass Farm is a history that reads like a novel

Barba : life in the fully adaptable environment by Winy Maas( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How could nanotechnology change buildings and cities in the future? Imagine a new substance, that could be steered and altered in real time. Imagine creating a nanomaterial that could change its shape, that could shrink and expand; that could do almost anything. We've named this material Barba. With Barba, we would be able to adapt our environment to every desire and every need. The latest book in 'The Why Factory's future cities' series envisions how nanomaterial might drastically change cities and architecture in the future. This speculation on fully adaptable environments is illustrated in the best tradition of science fiction. We follow an inhabitant for a day and see, how everyday routines change in these new, flexible spaces. This story forms the point of departure for a series of interactive experiments, installations, and proposals towards the development of new, body-based and fully adaptive architectures

Five minutes city : architecture and (im)mobility, forum & workshop Rotterdam 2002 by Winy Maas( Book )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What happens with cities when any position in them can be reached within a certain time span and with a specific means of transport? What does a place need when this goal is 2 hours, 1 hour or 5 minutes? How would the FiveMinutesCity be? Publication is the result of a forum and workshop for young architects organized by the Berlage Institute in collaboration with the Mies van der Rohe Foundation (Barcelona) and the Institut Francais d'Architecture (Paris). For this event, the second of a series of three within the framework of the GAUDI program, Winny Maas, architect and partner in MVRDV, was invited as the workshop master. The FiveMinutesCity is conceived by Maas. It is a narrative, squeezed in the format of a PowerPoint presentation with comic book flirtations. It starts with a series of projects by MVRDV and the Berlage Institute and continues with a report of the forum and workshop in Rotterdam. It concludes with a series of essays by the guest professors and lecturers
