The Renaissance portrait : from Donatello to Bellini by Bode-Museum( Book )

11 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 920 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"'The Renaissance Portrait,' which accompanies a landmark exhibition at the Bode-Museum, Berlin, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, provides new research and insight into the early history of portraiture in Italy, examining in detail how its major art centers--Florence, the priestly courts, and Venice--saw the rapid development of portraiture as closely linked to Renaissance society and politics, ideas of the individual, and concepts of beauty. Essays by leading scholars provide a thorough introduction to Renaissance portraiture, while individual catalogue entries illustrate and extensively discuss more than 160 magnificent examples of painting, drawing, manuscript illumination, sculpture, and medallic portraiture by such artists as Donatello, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Verrocchio, Ghirlandaio, Pisanello, Mantegna, Antonello da Messina, and Giovanni Bellini."--Inside cover

Botticelli, Grey( Book )

4 editions published in 2011 in German and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Berlin Gemäldegalerie invited American artist Michael Joaquin Grey to choose one of the well-known Renaissance portraits in the museum's collection and produce a contemporary artistic reaction to the work. Grey chose Sandro Botticelli's painting "Simonetta Vespucci" (ca. 1475). The portrait is the basis for the computer generated work "Between Simonetta", which slowly but continuously alters the portrait by means of an algorithmic program, calculating ever-new combinations. Questions arising from this work - of likeness and ideal, of authenticity, temporality and the transformation of the image - lie at the centre of the catalogue. The artist at once thematizes the paradigms of human perception and explores the genesis of the face as a constructive, self-reflexive process.0Exhibition: Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen, Berlin (3.9.2011-18.8.2012)
