Advanced intellect-augmentation techniques by D. C Engelbart( Book )

8 editions published between 1970 and 1972 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This progress report covers a two-year project which is part of a program that is exploring the value of computer aids in augmenting human intellectual capability. The background and nature of the program, its resources, and the activities it has undertaken are outlined. User experience in applying augmentation tools and techniques to various normal working tasks is described so as to convey an impression of what it is like to work in an augmented environment. The conclusion is drawn that this type of working-support, computer-aid systems for augmenting individual and team effort is going to be widely developed and used. Multi-access computer networks are seen to be especially important; they will become special marketplaces where a new kind of competitive evolution will take place, not only in hardware, software, and special services, but also in roles, skills, working methods, and employment dynamics for the intellectual workers at the terminals. Augmenting human intellect; a conceptual framework by D. C Engelbart( Book )

5 editions published between 1962 and 1997 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is an initial summary report of a project taking a new and systematic approach to improving the intellectual effectiveness of the individual human being. A detailed conceptual framework explores the nature of the system composed of the individual and the tools, concepts, and methods that match his basic capabilities to his problems. One of the tools that shows the greatest immediate promise is the computer, when it can be harnessed for direct on-line assistance, integrated with new concepts and methods

Augmenting human intellect : experiments, concepts, and possibilities by D. C Engelbart( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Early stages of research on augmenting human intellect are reported. An experimental system comprising a tapewriter (tape-punching typewriter), a computer-programmed Translator, and a Flexowriter and incorporating a text-editing facility has been implemented and was used in composing much of the original rough draft of the report. The Z-code system that provides the editing operations is described. The general philosophy of the system is described, and then an illustration is given in which the philosophy is applied to a particular problem. A chord handset is discussed that will permit one or two-handed binary transmission, and possible results of its incorporation into the system are mentioned. Questions still to be answered and speculations about possible future results are included. (Author)
Experimental Development of a Small Computer-Augmented Information System by D. C Engelbart( Book )

3 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Research is reported in three categories of investigation: development of augmented management and operational techniques for running a research intelligence system, further building of the data base, and improvement of the computer aids supporting the processes. A 'People Services Operation' was established with procedures to aid throughout of incoming information and entry into the data base. Procedures for citation formation and citation file- building were refined, and the data base was expanded using these. Progress was made in development of a coordinated automatic process for entry and storage of catalog data and for catalog and index production

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Computer-augmented management-system research and development of augmentation facility( Book )

2 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report covers two years of research in a continuing program in the Augmentation Research Center (ARC) of the Information Sciences Laboratory of Stanford Research Institute. The research reported is aimed at the development of on-line computer aids for increasing the performance of individuals and teams engaged in intellectual work, and the development of techniques for the use of such aids. The report covers hardware and software development; applications in several areas relating to management of a community of workers who use on-line aids and to information management for such a community, participation in the ARPA computer network, and a summary of plans for the continuation of the research. Explorations in the automation of sensormotor skill training [by] Douglas C. Engelbart [and] Philip H. Sorensen, Stanford Research Institute, Menlo Park, Calif. Contract no. N61339-1517 by D. C Engelbart( Book )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of the study was to explore the feasibility of using a computer to teach a psychomotor task, i.e., operation of a 5-key chord keyset for binary coding. The other functions studied were mode of presenting prompts (visual, tactual) and effects of feedback upon performance. The automated visual and tactual prompting modes were compared with what might be considered to be a 'traditional' mode, in which subjects (Ss) learned the code by referring to a code sheet. The results indicated that none of the methods of prompting was superior to the others. However, the fact that Ss could be taught to perform a psychomotor task by means of a computer is a significant advance in training procedures. The results also indicated that the provision of feedback aided performance for each of the prompting modes
Development of a Multidisplay, Time-Shared Computer Facility and Computer-Augmented Management-System Research( Book )

1 edition published in 1968 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report describes work in a continuing research effort on systems for computer aid to management. Specific applications to management problems include management-information systems, aids to conferencing and group interaction, and the ability to maintain highly flexible and dynamic records of various kinds and use them as a working framework. Special software developments for implementation and modification of interactive user aids include the Tree Meta compiler-compiler; the MOL940 machine-oriented programming language; four Special-Purpose Languages (SPL's), for high-level specification of user control functions; and a multipurpose interactive user-aid system (NLS) which integrates these components. Specially developed hardware coupled to the computer provides I/O service to six CRT user consoles. A novel display system uses small CRT's located in the computer room, with television coupling to the individual user consoles. (Author)

Research on computer-augmented information management( Book )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This report presents results of a research and experimental project in computer-augmented information management. The report is, in itself a product of the project: With the exception of 'front matter, ' the entire report was composed, edited, and produced with on-line and off-line computer aids. For this project, the techniques of computer aids were applied to two areas: task monitoring and program design. The processes and techniques developed offer a promising beginning to computer-aided programming design extending from initial specification to final debugging in a unified design record that grows and evolves to complete final documentation. The processes and techniques also offer promise in increasing the productivity of individuals and groups of programmers. Future work envisioned for information-management systems such as that used in this study include program design records, external reference documentation, and user reference manuals. As an appendix, there is attached 'User's Guide: Man-Machine Information System, ' revised June 1965. (Author)
