Nach einer heftigen Auseinandersetzung mit ihrem Verlobten Frank verabredet sich Alice spontan mit einem Bekannten, einem jungen und begabten Maler. Als sie ihn in seiner Galerie besucht, wird er zudringlich und versucht, sie zu vergewaltigen. Doch Alice gelingt es sich zu verteidigen und sie tötet den Peiniger mit einem Messer. Von nun an wird sie von einem Unbekannten erpresst. Erpressung entstand 1929, als der Tonfilm noch in den Kinderschuhen steckte. Der Film wurde zuerst als Stummfilm gedreht, aber Alfred Hitchcock stellte parallel auch einen Tonfilmversion her. Der Regisseur war nicht damit einverstanden, einfach nur ein paar Dialogszenen hinzuzufügen. Er bestand darauf, den kompletten Film neu zu drehen und schuf so ein ganz eigenes Werk.
