Seeing the massacre of a village of Cheyenne at Sand Creek, in 1864, a U.S. soldier (Harmonika) tears up the American flag in disgust. After he saves the life of an Indian girl (Rehkitz), he seeks friendship with the Indians. Her brother, Harter Felsen, must gradually overcome his own prejudices; then Harmonika can marry Rehkitz. One day she is killed by white men. Harmonika finds the killer, but - after he cannot exact vengeance - he becomes an alcoholic. He finds his trusted friend, Harter Felsen, in captivity, frees him, and they become Bloodbrothers. Together they take off with the Cheyenne in their struggle for freedom
