Concerns a variety of business and personal matters unrelated to the publication of Werfel's works. 4 items pertain to the publication by Simon and Schuster of Hermann Borchardt's novel The Conspiracy of the Carpenters, for which Werfel wrote a foreword. Simon's communication with the U.S. Consulate in London was in regard to an affidavit in support of Anna Mahler's application for an immigration visa. Werfel's letter expressed his support for a book project of Ludwig Marcuse.

The correspondence covers the period when Borchardt was working on his novel Die Verschwörung der Zimmerleute (The Conspiracy of the Carpenters), which was published in an abridged English translation by Simon & Schuster in 1943, with a foreword by Franz Werfel. (The unabridged German version of the novel was published for the first time in 2005.) A series of small note-sheets, mostly in Werfel's hand, document a conversation between Werfel and Borchardt, apparently at the St. Moritz Hotel in New York City, about the novel and the translation (Werfel talked on paper due to Borchardt's poor hearing). Topics of Borchardt's letters include his writing, his health problems, his precarious financial situation and struggle to support his family, and his political opinions. With one letter Borchardt encloses a copy of a letter he had written to Hubertus Prinz zu Löwenstein but which his wife had prevented him from mailing; in another communication, he sends along an excerpt entitled "Germany Speaking," from a brochure entitled Basic German Education, which he said he had written for Friedrich Wilhelm Foerster.

Correspondence between Borchardt and several friends, including several news clippings and photographs. Subjects discussed include the emergence of Nazi Germany under Hitler and the origins and consequences of World War II. They despise Hitler's tactics, expressed dismay with British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement, and criticized Hitler's deal with Russia's Stalin (i.e. the German-Russian Non-Aggression Pact of 1939). The collection also makes reference to German playwright Bertolt Brecht, whose views of war the correspondents agreed with.
