ARoS Aarhus Art Museum is proud to present SOMETHING STRANGE THIS WAY; a presentation of six spectacular multimedia installations by the internationally renowned Canadian artist duo Janet Cardiff (b. 1957) and George Bures Miller (b. 1960). The majority of those interested in art will know Cardiff and Miller as sound artists. Many of us will have experienced, or heard about, their so-called 'walks' with Cardiff's intimate and thoughtful voice guiding us through public spaces. However, though sound is prominent and still constitutes the key element in Cardiff and Miller's works, they also work within many other kinds of media. Since the mid-1990s they have created a number of large, interactive and spectacular installations featuring sound, music, narrative, found objects as well as compelling light effects. These are the kinds of art works that form the core of the exhibition Something Strange This Way at ARoS. The title of the exhibition Something Strange This Way refers to mysterious places, amusement parks and museums where strange and bizarre forces are at play. Like a large number of Cardiff and Miller's works the exhibition plays on our expectations; they provoke our curiosity and seduce us, before twisting and revealing a new dimension ... Cardiff and Miller love surprises, complex feelings and open narratives. In the exhibition Something Strange this Way they take us on an unusual and wonderful journey through several dimensions in time, into a series of mental states, into the intellectual worlds of their fictitious characters, to the 'strangest' places; the home of an opera lover, an abandoned dentist's office or an unusual amusement park.--ARoS website

Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller : works from the Goetz collection by Janet Cardiff( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in German and English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The sound installations and sound images by the Canadian artist duo Janet Cardiff & Georges Bures Miller have received international acclaim. Over a period of years, Ingvild Goetz has incorporated an entire series of works by Cardiff (b. 1957 in Ontario) and Miller (b. 1960 in Alberta) into her collection. This publication is the first to present them all together, providing details about their creation and references and shedding light on their place in the artists' oeuvre. In doing so, particular focus is placed on the key importance of sound as well as the special way that Cardiff & Miller deal with this very important-yet usually only subliminally perceived-aspect of current media art

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Act/React: Interactive Installation Art makes its world premiere at the Milwaukee Art Museum from October 4, 2008, through January 11, 2009. Showcasing a growing body of contemporary art that is visitor-dependent - without the use of specific interfaces like keyboards or touchscreens - this exhibition of motion-driven installation art empowers visitors to exercise their creativity and act on their curiosity. Act/React features the work of six pioneers of responsive art (including an Academy Award winning Jurassic Park special effects designer) in the Museum's famous Calatrava-designed galleries." "The Act/React DVD/catalogue, coproduced by the Milwaukee Art Museum and ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art, documents this first totally interactive art exhibition. The catalogue includes an introduction by Joseph D. Ketner II, coordinating curator, and illustrated essays by George Fifield on the history of interactive art and by Judith S. Donath on the social ramifications of interactivity."--Jacket
