The Ada Compiler Validation Capability (ACVC) is a suite of tests designed to determine an Ada compiler's conformance to MIL-STD-1815A, the Ada Language Reference Manual (LRM). Version 1.9 was released in December 1986 and became the official ACVC version, replacing 1.8, in June 1987. ACVC version 1.9 will be the official version until June 1988 when it will be replaced by ACVC version 1.10. Each of the 3122 tests in the ACVC 1.9 is designed to test a single test objective specified in the Ada Implementor's Guide (AIG), to a document enumerating the LRM into discrete test objectives in order to aid compiler development. The ACVC 1.9 is written on 35 diskettes written in MS DOS format at nine sectors per track. Each test in the suite is named according to the compilation stages - compiler, link, execute - analyzed and the section of the AIG, down to the specific test objective, covered ... Software Description: The software is written in ADA for implementation on IBM-PC or compatible microcomputers using the MS-DOS Version 2.1 or later operating system. This is the Ada Complier Validation Capability (ACVC) User's Guide which details the use of Version 1.10 of the ACVC. This document describes the ACVC test suite, its use, and interpretation of the test results. It should be read by anyone who wishes to use the ACVC to test an implementation of the Ada language. The primary purpose of the ACVC is to help decide whether an Ada translator/complier conforms to ANSI/MIL-STD-1815A, the Reference Manual for the Ada Programming Language (RM). The RM is also known as the Ada Standard. The ACVC is maintained by the ACVC Maintenance Organization (AMO) under the direction of the Ada Validation Office (AVO) of the Air Force's Ada Joint Program Office (AJPO). The three main components of the ACVC are (1) An implementers' guide that describes the implementation implications of the RM and the conditions that are checked by each validation test program; (2) A suite of validation test programs that are submitted to a compiler; AND (3) Validation support tools that assist in determining system capabilities, preparing tests for compilation, and analyzing the results of execution

Investigation of Spatial Disorientation of F-15 Eagle Pilots( Book )

An extensive investigation, including F-15 pilot interviews at Eglin AFB FL, and Langley AFB VA, into the characteristics and operation of the F-15 Eagle was conducted over a seven month period. In addition, F-16 pilots at Hill AFB UT, were interviewed. The following conclusions were drawn from the information acquired: The F-15 does not possess any unusual flight handling characteristics that could lead to pilot spatial disorientation. The large bubble canopy and the pilot's sitting height in the cockpit generally do not appear to significantly contribute to spatial disorientation. The asymmetrical exterior lighting strips on the F-15 can cause confusion on the part of the wing man regarding his formation position relative to the lead aircraft or the bank angle of the lead aircraft. Night formation join-ups, particularly from the stern, are rather difficult for the F-15 pilot due to the absence of adequate exterior lighting to provide the necessary depth perception cues for ascertaining the range and attitude of the lead aircraft. The layout of the F-15 cockpit generally manifests adherence to good human factors design principles. The F-15 Spatial Disorientation Team also uncovered some areas of potential pilot distraction. These areas, uncovered during pilot interviews, do not necessarily affect the incidence of spatial disorientation, but may add to the F-15 pilot's workload. The report includes these areas, and also makes a number of recommendations based on the results of the study

The Model Engine Warranty developed by Air Force, iteratively, over a three year period is one of the many variations. It is to be tailored to fit the situation and was designed to help engine program managers formulate a warranty if one is part of their strategy. One possible outcome of considering warranty is that a warranty is not needed. This paper explores aspects of the Model Engine Warranty and its improvements over earlier warranties. Future forms of engine product performance agreements are mentioned. The concept of future commonality or standardization is discussed, with some of its perceived benefits. (Author)

The Avionics Integrity Program (AVIP) is an Aeronautical Systems Division initiative to develop an orderly procedure to assure that we acquire reliable, high quality, and supportable avionics systems. A draft military standard has been prepared and has been distributed for review and comment. The draft standard outlines an orderly process using existing tools in order to assure integrity. The orderly technical process combined with an appropriate contract strategy using incentives is expected to yield the highest probability of success in achieving integrity. This paper introduces the Avionics Integrity Program (AVIP) and answers the questions often asked regarding the program. (Author)

The report documents those opportunities which now exist to enhance planning and scheduling within this environment and some current developments which further describe it. Based on these observations some specific recommendations and concerns that may require further study are identified. A Simulation Study of the Use of JTIDS in Tactical Missions( Book )

A simulation study of the usefullness of the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System in a tactical situation was conducted using the A-10 flight simulator. Thirteen currently operational pilots from TAC and USMC units each flew eight missions. The missions included both close air support and interdiction scenarios in a tactical environment, and the pilots were assigned to those conditions using an ABBA experimental design. Subjective data provided by the pilots showed a definite preference for the JTIDS system. Experimental results indicated that JTIDS offers the capability for low task lead navigation, better communications, and improved situation awareness. The potential benefits of the system include an increased probability of mission success and improved survivability

A C-133A aircraft was surveyed to determine the vibration environment existing on the fuselage side-wall and the cargo deck under all normal flight conditions. Approximately 9,760 data points were obtained from 16 separate locations on the vehicle during three test flights. The data were evaluated to determine the adequacy of vibration testing requirements of the cargo area and will be used to arrive at a more realistic set of vibration test requirements concerning (1) items of cargo to be transported in such aircraft and (2) items of equipment which will be installed on the cargo deck or fuselage sidewalls of the C-133A

Affordability and readiness are among the most prominent concerns in the defense establishment today--to say nothing about the Congress and the media. Any number of techniques, procedures and controls have been established to improve management of systems acquisition and to minimize cost growth, the perennial nemesis of large, complex human endeavors. Cost/schedule control systems and reporting, for example, are now standard practice. No one technique, or combination of techniques, has yet been found to provide a satisfactory solution for today's acquisition managers. It is our purpose to portray quality in systems acquisition from this commercially-oriented perspective. An improvement strategy which is relevant to both readiness and affordability is outlined. It treats quality in its broadest, multifunctional sense. The bottom line is that if quality/productivity improvement is important to us in defense, then we must manage to get it. The strategy to be discussed is not a one-shot program or a quick fix. Rather, it is a basic shift in how we approach our work and is based on application of successful commercial practice to the system acquisition environment

An XC-123D aircraft, SN 53-8068, was surveyed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio to determine the vibration environment existing throughout the vehicle under all flight conditions expected in service. Approximately 24,300 data points were obtained from 23 separate locations on the vehicle during four test flights. The data obtained in this survey were evaluated to determine the adequacy of vibration test requirements for aircraft equipment as contained in Specification Nr. Mil-E-5272C. The data indicated that the vibration testing requirements of this specification were adequate with the exception of the very light pieces of equipment which were attached to the fuselage sidewalls in the vicinity of the prop plane

This paper presents the status of the application of optimal control theory to guidance analysis of advanced air-launched missiles which have the capability to modulate thrust magnitude. A brief synopsis is given of work which investigates the effect of TMC relative to proportional navigation, optimal turn laws, and overall trajectory optimization. A description is given of the fabrication studies and tests to determine the material allowables for, together with a description of, subscale and full-scale filament- o nd sandwich rocket motor cases. The edgewise compression and smallscale sandwich-wall cylinder tests that were initiated to determine design values for sizing the subscale and full-scale sandwich rocket motor cases are summarized. The fabrication process used to build the sandwich- wall cylinders and subscale cases is described in detail, together with the associated mandrel-tooling development studies. Test results of the subscale motor cases are discussed and analyzed. A subscale case was built which exceeded the ultimate design pressure by 10 percent. A detailed stress analysis for the full-scale rocket motor cases is presented, together with design drawings of the motor case, nozzle, and internal insulation

Acoustic measurements were made of the sound pressure level-time functions which were produced at six locations on Cape Canaveral Missile Test Annex and at four locations in the surrounding communities during the Saturn SA- 1 launch on 27 October 1961. The frequency range of measured data was from the 4.7 to 9.4 cps octave band to the 4800 to 9600 cps octave band. Distances from the launch site to the noise measuring sites ranged from 3700 to 100,000 feet. Vibration data were taken at three locations at the Tel-2 telemetry site. The frequency range of measured data was from the 4.5 to 9 cps octave band to the 1125 to 2250 cps octave band. The distance from the launch site was 5200 feet. Only the basic sound pressure level-time environments and vibration level-time environments as a function of octave bands of frequency are presented in this report
DEVELOPMENT OF 2400 F FORGING DIE SYSTEM( )

Work continued on (1) extending the upper temperature limit of the present hot die system, (2) minimizing the required forging sequences by using hot dies, and (3) evaluating new materials for use as a 2400 F forging die. The ultimate objective is a creation of a true hot working technology for refractory metals. The hot die system was installed in the 1000-ton press, and forging experiments were started to determine the upper operating conditions of the system. A die temperature of 1700 F was used while forging parts under the full 1000-ton load of the press. No die deformation was detected under these conditions. A set of dies for use in the extrusion-forging process was cast of Inconel 713C. The evaluation of materials for use as 2400 F die materials was continued. Compression strength tests at 2400 F were conducted on TiB2, KT SiC, Ta2 Be17, Al2O3, high-density graphite, siliconized graphite, and commercial graphite

Of the first class graduating from the Air Force Academy, 172 entered Flying Training. Scores from the Academy selection tests, given five years earlier, were correlated with pass/fail criteria in Primary and Basic Flying Training, and with final grades in Basic Training. None of the College Entrance Examination Board scores were predictive of success in Flying Training. The Pilot composite of the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test had moderately high validity for passing both Primary and Basic Training. Neither of the sets of selection tests much discrimination for final grades of the successful students
