The United States goal is to have all non self-destruct land mines demilitarized by 31 December 1999. To support this goal, this report pmvides recommendations for demilitarizing these mines as well as self-destmcting land mines. Although the use of open buminglopen detonation (OBIOD) is the primary method for destroying obsolete munitions because of its simplicity and low cost, increasing environmental regulations are expected to severely limit, if not eliminate the use of OBIOD in the near future. For this reason, OBIOD was not considered in this plan as a demilitarization method. The demilitarization methods and technologies that are addressed in this plan have either been developed by the Armament Systems Process Division of the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center under the direction of the U.S. Army Defense Ammunition Center, or are based on existing methods used for other items. All methods that are presented in this plan allow for the recovery of materials, with the degree of recovery tied to the activities and economics of the demilitarization method

A large deformation analysis of the engraving process and wear in a projectile rotating band is considered by using the finite element program ABAQUS. The tube and the projectile are assumed to be rigid. and the bore of the tube is assumed to be smooth and axisymmetric. An elastic-plastic material model is chosen for the copper band, which remains attached to the projectile, and an appropriate coefficient of sliding friction is chosen. The magnitude and distribution of the contact pressure between the band and the tube are obtained during engraving. The band pressure is large with severe plastic deformation occurring in the band

This report covers the POP tests performed on wood wirebound box fabricated per MIL-B-46506. This wirebound box is being used as shipping and storage container of various 60MM Mortar Cartridges. The wirebound box tested (P/N 9234845) contained two metal containers PA60 (P/N 9234844). Each metal container contained eight cartridges each packaged in spirally wound fiber container (P/N 9254735). Friction on Crack Surfaces During Compression of Explosives - A Source of Hot Spots and Probable Ignition Sites( )

The mechanical properties of composite plastic bonded explosives were investigated as a function of confining pressure. The results indicate different failure processes in two pressure ranges, a low pressure range between about 0.1 to 7.0 MPa, which is considered in this paper and a higher pressure range. In the low pressure range, crack processes are important in failure. The pressure dependence of the compressive strength in the low pressure range is attributed to coulomb friction between surfaces of closed shear cracks and from the observed linear increase of the strength with pressure and the angle of the fracture plane a friction coefficient is obtained. A friction coefficient can also be obtained from the ratio of the compressive to tensile strength and directly form the above angle. The friction coefficient obtained from these three separate observations is in agreement and this is taken as strong evidence for the importance of this friction in determining strength and mechanical failure. Frictional heating during deformation can then cause hot spots leading to ignition

Qualification Test of Handle Strap, P/N 9381751, Manufactured by Panduit Corporation for 81-mm Mortar Ammunition Fiber Container( )

This report details the tests conducted on the plastic handle straps, drawing 9381751, needed to assemble the plastic handles to fiber (tube) containers used to pack the 81-mm mortar ammunition. The strength of straps received from Thomas and Betts Corporation, the approved source of supply stated on the drawing, was compared with those by Panduit Corporation, a candidate supplier. Test runs stressed the strap's material and locking device to failure after 2 hr of temperature conditioning at -50 degrees F, +70 degrees F, and +1 60 degrees F. The test results indicated that the strength of Panduit candidate strap samples was much less than that of the Thomas & Betts' product, therefore, not acceptable for use to pack the 81-mm mortar ammunition in their fiber containers
