On Kawara : date painting(s) in New York and 136 other cities by On Kawara( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On Kawara (°1933) is fascinated by counting and by time. For more than forty years he has been making not only lists of the years from a million years ago to 1969, for example, but also his "date paintings". He made the first paintingin this Today Series in New York on 4 January 1966: a0monochrome canvas painted with the day, month and year. Since then he has been painting the date according to the same procedure at regular intervals, in New York or in some other city where he happened to be, using a white sans serif script on a monochrome background and following0the conventions of the country in question. Sometimes he adds a press cutting from the newspaper of the day to the painting in the box in which it is stored when not on show. This is the first time that On Kawara presents a retrospective of forty-five years of date paintings.00Exhibition: David Zwirner Gallery, New York
