This Final Report describes research. The first two-time photoelectric correlation measurements of a ring laser were completed during this period, which demonstrated the effect of mode competition in modifying the characteristics of a laser. Theoretical quantum treatments of a two-mode ring laser, and of a laser with coupled transitions were completed, and phase transition effects in a laser exhibiting optical bistability, and one with a saturable absorber, were investigated. The research resulted in four publications in the scientific literature, and 11 lectures describing various aspects of the research were presented at scientific meetings and research seminars. Angular spectrum representation is derived for the electromagnetic field scattered from any linear, time-independent medium. In particular, the medium may be homogeneous or inhomogeneous, isotropic or anisotropic, spatially nondispersive or spatially dispersive, and it may be dielectric, magnetic, or magnetoelectric. The spectral amplitudes of the plane-wave modes of the scattered field are found to depend in a relatively simple manner on the induced polarization and on the induced magnetization. In the special case when the first Born approximation applies, the results take a particurly simple form and may be used to determine the scattered electromagnetic field vectors at any distance from the scatterer

With a disc spacing of 0.5mm the best observed voltage multiplication of the pulse when it reached the center was a factor of 3.4 compared to a predicted gain of 6

This research was primarily concerned with the broad area of optical coherence theory, with special reference to the influence of partial coherence on light transmission. Some newly discovered effects relating to focussing, as well as correction of wave-front distortions by the technique of phase conjugation were also studied; these topics are of special relevance for the understanding of the structure of images, especially those formed with laser light, and for adaptive optics. Results are reported of investigation in the area of light propagation and spectroscopy from sources of arbitrary states of coherence. The research undertaken has completely clarified the foundations of the radiometric model. It was demonstrated conclusively that spatial coherence properties of a source influence the nature of the spectrum of the emitted radiation. A number of results were derived relating to effects of a random medium on the state of polarization of light transmitted through it. The final technical report on research performed under the ONR contract 'Fundamental Studies of Photon Statistics', emphasizes some of the most interesting results obtained. They deal with non-classical interference, violations of locality, and the determination of the time interval between two photons with femtosecond accuracy. Some possibilities for a new type of optical communication channel were explored. The research resulted in 62 publications and 88 lectures or papers presented at scientific meetings and seminars. These are all listed. Seven graduate students completed Ph. D. degrees with support from the ONR contract. (EMK)
