AUTOMATIC MAP COMPILATION SYSTEM( Book )

2 editions published in 1962 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Automatic Map Compilation System utilizes a small digital computer which directs an analog system to the indicated ho ologous points for an estimated height on a stereo diapositive pair. An analog scan, with associated correlatio equipment, op rates to measur the height error. The detailed terrain data obtained from the scan is used to produce an orthophoto and the altitude measurement is used to produce a drop-line chart from which the contour lines can be drawn. The system analysis, mechanical design, and computer program did not reveal any serious problems. The de ign is quite straightforward although there are many areas where the stringent accuracy requirements dictated unusual solutions. The mechanical system is quite conventional, with carriage supports consisting of V-groove ways using ball b aring blocks and servomotors coupled through precision ball-nut screws and anti-backlash gears. The control system utilizes 400-cps components, thereby providing higher speed capabilities an a larger range of design components to select from. The orthophoto and drop-line chart are produced photographically, the latter by a print-out of three gray tones defining the desired contour intervals. (Author)

AUTOMATIC STEREOMAPPING SYSTEM( Book )

1 edition published in 1962 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The Stereomapping System mechanizes the operation of a Kelsh plotter to automatically produce contour data and orthophotos. It utilizes a Nipkow disc to scan the stereo image and makes appropri-ATE HEIGHT CHANGES TO KEEP THE SCANNING SURFACE AT THE ELEVATION OF THE TERRAIN MODEL. The detailed terrain data obtained from the scan is used to recreate the image element in proper position for orthophoto production; the altitude information is obtained by reporting the height of the scanning disc. The orthophoto and altitude data are recorded photographically in a printout subassembly. The system analysis, electronic design and mechanical design did not reveal any serious problems. The mechanical system is conventional, with carriage supports consisting of ball-nut bushings and tubular ways. The orthophoto and drop-line chart are produced photographically, the latter by a ''print-out'' of three gray tones whose boundaries define the desired contour intervals. (Author)

WORD SEARCHING DEVICE. PART II( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Additional work directed towards recognition of complete words is reported. It is shown that such systems are unattractive because of the extremely severe tolerance requirements to effect a satisfactory match. The basic conclusion of the report is that a word searching device utilizing letter-by-letter recognition appears most promising. The system would have four basis units: (1) a text scanner incorporating a high resolution flying spot scanner and a suitable electronic servo to permit following lines of text; (2) a letter recognizer with associated logic having a learning capability; a word detector utilizing a transparency that can be marked by grease pencil to the code of the desired key words and associated scanner, photomultiplier and logic to detect occurrences of the key words; and (4) a read-out recorder to display the occurrences of the key words for study to determine possible interest. A simplified version of the word searcher is described which would show feasibility of all of the novel elements of the proposed system. (Author)
BIBLIOGRAPHY IN MACHINE TRANSLATION by Bozidar Kralevich( Book )

1 edition published in 1960 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The bibliography was compiled in order to fill the need for a partial listing of the literature available in machine translation. The nature of the needs at the time of compilation has given a heavy emphasis toward representing the work being done in the Soviet Union. The bibliography should by no means be considered as being complete. (Author)

Research was performed on the three-dimensional containment of charged dust particles, ions, and electrons by means of oscillating electric and electromagnetic fields
Image format considerations in photographic intelligence processing. metricard design( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The significance of the format of photos, maps, charts, and other graphic data is discussed in terms of the effects on efficiency of photo data reduction systems. The varied functions in such systems suggest many different format defining parameters. These parameters and their interrelationships are considered for the purpose of identifying formats of maximum utility for all such functions. It is concluded that a wide range of photo data reduction activities can effectively be accomplished with one standard size of unit record prepared from 70 millimeter roll film and containing an image with a minimum dimension very close to 2.25 inches. The other dimension of the image may require variation from 2.25 in. to a value about one-third larger to meet various geometrical and technical considerations. A description of such a standard format (Metricard) is presented. This format was designed to meet the requirements of photo data reduction systems emphasizing the features of rapid handling, moderate storage volume, and high information density. (Author)

Ramo-wooldridge general research program, 1959. f. studies of boiling heat transfer( Book )

1 edition published in 1940 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

An analytical expression, in terms of the bubble population, was derived for the velocity of the liquid adjacent to the heating surface. This velocity was used to estimate the heat transfer in nucleate boiling. Experimental data indicate that when bubbles can be considered as isolated, then the heat transfer in nucleate boiling is intermittent and bears a similarity to the transfer of heat from a flat plate with boundary layer formation. Experimental data indicate also that as the vapor void fraction (vapor hold-up) on the heating surface increases there occurs a change in the hydrodynamic conditions of the two-phase system. This change occurs at a heat flux density well below the critical heat flux. The vapor removal is altered from an intermittent to a continuous process. The mechanism of heat transfer is affected but not the process

It was demonstrated that particles having dimensions of a few microns could be efficiently accelerated to 2 km/sec or so at modest voltage levels
WORD SEARCHING DEVICE. PART I( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Considerable effort has been directed towards determining the basic limitations of a word searching device due to the characteristics of printed text. This analysis has been aided by simulation studies based on correlation measurements made on enlargements of typical English characters and subsequent experiments in which a digital computer simulated the Word Searcher. This investigation has shown that the differences in output signal between the desired key words and possible false alarms may be quite small with the result that the equipment tolerances must be closer than originally anticipated if successful operation is to be achieved. This report presents a detailed account of the investigation to date and of the difficulties encounterd. The unexpectedly stringent tolerance requirements has led to modification of the original approach. Alternate mechanizations are considered which by-pass the fundamental limitations of the flying-spot scanner system. (Author)
