in English and held by 1 library worldwide A group of letters, most of which are addressed to Elizabeth Julia Schlatter Chandler or to her husband Theophilus Parsons Chandler. The letters are from a number of different relatives and friends and discuss many topics, but there is no long run of correspondence with any one person. Also included is a small group of letters written by Theophilus Chandler, Jr., who was an architect in Philadelphia. He mostly writes about social events (weddings, going to the park), but also mentions office work. His sister Alice visited him in October 1882, and her letters to their parents discuss her brother's work. In one letter, she even sketched part of a Methodist church on which he was working. As well, the collection includes some business letters to Alfred Chandler, mostly concerning some project to take place on Mt. Desert Island, Maine.

They reflect the involvement of the family in farming, a general store and grocery, and the lumber industry. Materials documenting the family's activities in civic and religious organizations are also included. The materials include correspondence and other personal material, followed by legal, financial, and purchasing records. The New Gloucester series contains various documents from citizens of the town as well as a small group of materials about the militia, schools, churches, and various organizations in the town.

There are also letters from friends including 37 from Henry Adams to Margaret Chanler; some letters concerning their professional activities, especially Margaret Chanler's book, Roman Spring; lecture notes and a commonplace book, 1883, that she kept; and a brief diary, 1900, of her husband.
