Colonial Massachusetts and New England documents collected by Thomas Prince for his "Chronological History of New England in the Form of Annals" (1736). Included are letters to and from influential political figures in colonial Mass., among them Sir Edmund Andros, Joseph Dudley, John Cotton, Simon Bradstreet, Joseph Hinckley (Prince's maternal grandfather), Edward Randolph, Elisha Cooke, and Jacob Leisler. Among the topics discussed are the governments of the Massachusetts and Plymouth Bay Colonies, the Territory and Dominion of New-England following the revocation of the Mass. Bay charter in 1684, the imprisonment of Andros and Randolph in 1689, and relations between England and the colonies. The collection consists of correspondence, business papers, miscellaneous personal papers, pocket journals, a lithograph, a map, and a dissertation of the Cotton family from 1810-1939. The correspondence consists of letters from the Cotton family, Blackshear family, related families, and their business acquaintances. Business papers are of James W. Cotton and Charles Cotton, and include receipts, bonds, mortgages, accounts, and tax notices. Personal papers are of various family members and include estate papers of James W. Cotton and Charles C. Blackshear. Clippings relate to Charles C. Blackshear's world travels, and particularly to Java, Indonesia; his pocket memo books contain notes on his 1906 and 1912 trips. The lithograph is of John Cleveland Salter, son of Eliza and C.J. Salter; the map is of Java. The dissertation is Charles C. Blackshear's and was written for his Johns Hopkins degree (1890)
