Embracing the tension : the evidence for conflict as the locus of moral growth : a study of moral growth in Friends high schools by Irene McHenry( Book )

1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This report summarizes a 3-year dialogue among educators, administrators, students, boards, committees, parents, and project researchers launched by the Friends Council on Education to study moral growth in Friends high schools. Steering committees were established in each of the 24 participating Quaker high schools across the country and surveys were conducted. Visits were made to seven schools and case studies of two schools are presented. The core values that were identified by the school communities were respect, acceptance and diversity, self reflection, and responsibility. The report offers five words or phrases the study team selected from the student-view-of-school word checklist that showed how much voice students felt they had at school: (1) democratic, (2) fair, (3) not afraid to complain, (4) stands up for belief, and (5) talkative. The report finds that the chief opportunity for learning to express the individual voice and nurturing elements necessary for moral growth is the weekly meeting for worship. Other practices such as meeting for business, gatherings, judiciary committees, and threshing sessions support the development of student voice. The best climate for moral growth in Friends schools seems to be one in which students are not afraid to speak up, where they are taught the skill of listening to others and are provided the time and encouragement for self-reflection, and where they are included in key processes and practices in which important decisions about their lives are being made. Appendixes list study team members and participating schools, and give information about the survey, development of quantitative research design, and queries for school self-study. Contains 10 references. (Bt)
