Man's place in nature by Thomas Henry Huxley( Book )

31 editions published between 1863 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"I am very well aware that the old are prone to regard their early performances with much more interest than their contemporaries of a younger generation are likely to take in them; moreover, I freely admit that my younger contemporaries might employ their time better than in perusing the three essays, written thirty-two years ago, which occupy the first place in this volume. This confession is the more needful, inasmuch as all the premises of the argument set forth in " Man's Place in Nature" and most of the conclusions deduced from them, are now to be met with among other well-established and, indeed, elementary truths, in the text-books"--Preface. Michael Foster and Thomas Henry Huxley, correspondence, 1865-1895 by Michael Beresford Foster( Book )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The letters in this volume span some thirty years but there are gaps in the correspondence, most notably 1877 and 1883 (although there is one letter dated to 1881 and one to 1882). Foster and Huxley presumably did correspond during this period but we have no knowledge of what happened to the letters. In addition, the letter dating to 1888 appear not to be in either archive: some of these are reproduced in whole or in part in Leonard Huxley's two volume Life and letters of Thomas Henry Huxley and have been added to this volume. In transcribing the letters we have modernised spelling and punctuation, and corrected grammar. Words we have struggled to read or are unsure of have been put in square brackets. Illegible words are indicated as such

"This book endeavours to give the public a picture of Thomas Henry Huxley, of his aims in the many struggles in which he was engaged, of his character and temperament, and the circumstances under which his various works were begun and completed. So far as possible, his letters, and extracts from them, are made to tell the story." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)
The major prose of Thomas Henry Huxley by Thomas Henry Huxley( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was one of the intellectual giants of Victorian England. A surgeon by training, he became the principal exponent of Darwinism and popularizer of "scientific naturalism." Huxley was a prolific essayist, and his writings put him at the center of intellectual debate in England during the later half of the nineteenth century. The Major Prose of Thomas Henry Huxley fills a very real and pressing chasm in history of science books, bringing together almost all of Huxley's major nontechnical prose, including Man's Place in Nature and both "Evolution in Ethics" and its "Prolegomena."
On the origin of species; or, The causes of the phenomena of organic nature by Thomas Henry Huxley( Book )

7 editions published between 1863 and 2011 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Prefixed to the English edition, is the following note from Professor Huxley: "Mr. J. Aldous Mays, who is taking shorthand notes of my 'Lectures to Working Men,' has asked me to allow him, on his own account, to print those notes for the use of my audience. I willingly accede to this request, on the understanding that a notice is prefixed to the effect that I have no leisure to revise the Lectures, or to make alterations in them, beyond the correction of any important error in a matter of fact." The reader will not regret that the Lectures appear in this form. Taken from the lips of the distinguished naturalist, as he addressed an audience of Working Men, they have a clearness, a directness, and a simplicity which belonged to the circumstances of their delivery. In this respect, the following Lectures are incomparable. Dealing with the most abstruse and fundamental questions of mind and organization, these subjects are nevertheless presented in so lucid and attractive a manner as to impress vividly the commonest imagination"--Preface.
