An assembly designed to accelerate deuterons to about 10kev by means of a radially converging magnetic piston has been constructed and tested. The emphasis in this report is on design features and operational problems encountered. Samples of experimental data are included to illustrate the assembly's behavior. Specifically, the assembly operates with 300kv on the condenser, the ringing frequency is 18mc, and present operation uses hydrogen gas at 50 microns. Both slow and fast pinches have been observed, the former being possibly thermal shock waves, and the latter being associated with inward motion of the plasma sheath

"Knowledge of Cosmic Rays dates back to the early days of research in radioactivity. As in all fields of research the collection of accurate information about Cosmic Rays has been slow. This has been due, especially in the earlier period, to the lack of apparatus capable of obtaining the necessary data, and as the field of Nuclear Physics was new, no adequate theories had been developed. Within the past two decades, two valuable pieces of apparatus have been developed for the experimental study of Cosmic Rays. These instruments are the coincidence counter circuits employing Geiger-Muller (G.M.) counters and the counter controlled cloud chamber. A parametric study was made on the performance of a conical discharge shock generator. From these studies it was possible to formulate general ground rules to be followed in designing a shock tube of this type capable of producing a single high velocity shock at gas pressures varying from 25 - 2000 micron. Typically, shocks of M sub s - 150 were produced in D sub 2 at 100 micron pressure. (Author)

The effect on the neutron yield of variations in electrode material in a paraboloidal deuterium plasma focus assembly was investigated. Beryllium, titanium, iron, copper, and palladium anode tips were tested. The most significant improvement in neutron yields was produced by elements that are good deuterium absorbers, such as titanium. Average neutron yields were increased by a factor of 20 when the copper anode tip was replaced by a titanium tip. (Author)

Electrode metal effects in a deuterium plasma z-pinch device( Book )

The introduction of the hydrogen-gettering metals titanium and zirconium in a paraboloidal plasma Z-pinch device has produced a substantial increase in the neutron yield. Yields up to 3 x 10 to the 10th power neutrons per shot have been obtained using titanium-tipped electrodes in deuterium gas with an 18 kJ-energy source. The effect of these metals in increasing the neutron yield is sensitive to the compression obtained in this pinch device. This effect is small or nonexistent in Z-pinch devices with cylindrical electrodes where the space between the anode and cathode is large in the region of the pinch. (Author)
