Process decomposition through locality of reference by A Rogers( Book )

3 editions published between 1988 and 1989 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the context of sequential computers, it is common practice to exploit temporal locality of reference through devices such as caches and virtual memory. In the context of multiprocessors, we believe that it is equally important to exploit spatial locality of reference. We are developing a system which, given a sequential program and its domain decomposition, performs process decomposition so as to enhance spatial locality of reference. We describe an application of this method - generating code from shared-memory programs for the (distributed memory) Intel iPSC/2."
Compiler parallelization of SIMPLE for a distributed memory machine by Keshav Pingali( Book )

2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "In machines like the Intel iPSC/2 and the BBN Butterfly, local memory operations are much faster than inter-processor communication. When writing programs for these machines, programmers must worry about exploiting spatial locality of reference. This is tedious and reduces the level of abstraction at the [sic] which the programmer works. We are implementing a parallelizing compiler that will shoulder much of that burden. Given a sequential, shared memory program and a specification of how data structures are to be mapped across the processors, our compiler will perform process decomposition to exploit locality of reference. In this paper, we discuss some experiments in parallelizing SIMPLE, a large scientific benchmark from Los Alamos, for the Intel iPSC/2."

Best of Broadway( )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Created by ThinkQuest, this Web site is one of over 5,500 student-created entries that explores the history of Broadway Theater and some of the productions that you can see with the entire family. This groups' Web site is made to inform families about different Broadway productions, using a short description of the production and about the people who helped made it possible

An analysis of a combined hardware-software mechanism for speculative loads by Stefanos Damianakis( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "This paper describes a simple hardware mechanism and related compiler support for software-controlled speculative loads. The compiler issues speculative load instructions based on anticipated data references and the ability of the memory system to hide memory latency in high-performance processors. The architectural support for such a mechanism is simple and minimal, yet handles faults gracefully. We have simulated three speculative load mechanisms based on a MIPS processor and a detailed memory system. The results of scientific kernel loops indicate that speculative load techniques can hide memory latency effectively."
Supporting SPMD execution for dynamic data structures by Anne Rogers( Book )

1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "In this paper, we address the problem of supporting SPMD execution of programs that use recursively-defined dynamic data structures on distributed memory machines. The techniques developed for supporting SPMD execution of array-based programs rely on the fact that arrays are statically defined and directly addressable. As a result, these techniques do not apply to recursive data structures, which are neither statically defined nor directly addressable. We propose a three pronged approach. First, we describe a simple mechanism for migrating a thread of control based on the layout of heap allocated data. Second, we explain how to introduce parallelism into the model using a technique based on futures and lazy task creation [MKH91]

Software support for speculative loads by Anne Rogers( Book )

1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "This paper describes a very simple mechanism and related compiler support for software-controlled speculative loads. The compiler issues speculative load instructions based on anticipated data references and the ability of the memory system to hide memory latency in high-performance processors. The architectural support for such a mechanism is simple and minimal, yet handles faults gracefully. We have simulated the speculative load mechanism based on a MIPS processor and a detailed memory system. The results of scientific kernel loops indicate that the speculative load techniques are effective approaches to hiding memory latency."
Comparison study of heuristics for mapping parallel algorithms to message-passing multiprocessors by Marios D Dikaiakos( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "This paper presents a comparison study of popular clustering and mapping heuristics which are used to map task-flow graphs to message-passing multiprocessors. To this end, we use task-graphs which are representative of important scientific algorithms running on data-sets of practical interest. The annotation which assigns weights to nodes and edges of the task-graphs is realistic. It reflects current trends in processor, communication channel, and message-passing interface technology and takes into consideration hardware characteristics of state-of-the-art multiprocessors. Our experiments show that applying realistic models for task-graph annotation affects the effectiveness and functionality of clustering and mapping techniques. Therefore, new heuristics are necessary that will take into account more practical models of communication costs. We present modifications to existing clustering and mapping algorithms which improve their efficiency and running-time for the practical models adopted."

Ben Diary of A Heroin Addict by Anne Rogers( )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As a young man from a loving, middle class family living in a small English village, Ben Rogers appeared to have it all ... but then he found drugs. As his life descended into chaos and despair, Ben began to chronicle his daily struggles with the aid of a video camera. He was hopeful that one day his experiences could be used to educate others. Ben lost his battle against addiction and died when he was 34 as a result of medical withdrawal. His family decided to release the tapes in the hope that other families could benefit. The result was the highly acclaimed, award winning SKY documentary, 'Ben, Diary of a Heroin Addict' which was shown on national television 27 times and ultimately across the world. Ben's mother, Anne, received hundreds of letters and messages, not only from addicts but also from families saying that the documentary had helped them realise that they weren't alone. The film took Ben's mum to the Home Office, with interviews on national television, radio and the press. She has spoken with many young offenders desperate to educate other youngsters about addiction and to honour her son's wishes. The book includes writings and drawings by Ben which give a unique insight into the chaos surrounding drug addiction. His brother and sisters contribute too to the story of a family living on the edge. 'Ben, Diary of a Heroin Addict - A Mother's Fight' is both an attack against the government's tolerance of addiction and a powerful and moving depiction of one family's love
