Findings. In the post test condition, the teacher-directed schema questions strategy is most effective, followed by the inferencing and predicting strategy. Active comprehension with schema theory questions is least effective. Pretreatment is beneficial for below average readers, especially in combination with active comprehension with schema theory questions. The effects of students' attitudes toward literature are not clear. Students' essay responses indicate students write to meet the demands of the teacher, regardless of instructional intervention. Data indicate the role of the teacher is critical
