A similar set of measurements has been made for 1.25-Mev photons incident upon steel slabs 0.25 and 0.75 in. thick (0.26 and 0.78 mean free paths). The distance from the source to the detector was 25 ft for these measurements. The effect of interchanging two separated slabs of different thicknesses was measured for two slab pairs; one 0.25 and 0.75 in. thick, the other 0.50 and 1.00 in. thick. Dose buildup due to separated slab pairs was measured. It was also estimated from single slab data, and the results were compared

Measurements were made of the penetration of fallout gamma radiation into six compartmented steel structures, and determinations were made of the free-field radiation characteristics of the fallout field. Ionization chambers and film packets were placed inside steel compartments, which were then stacked to form six cubic structures measuring three compartments along each dimension. Each structure contained 27 compartments. The wall thickness of each structure was uniform. Thicknesses ranged from 1/4 to 1 1/2 in. Dose measurements were made both inside and on the outside surfaces of the structures during various periods from H+74 to H+262 hours. Additional measurements were made with photographic film within steel slabs of thicknesses to match those of the compartmented structures. Comparison of measurements within the slabs with those within the com/partmented structures gave a direct indication of extra dose attenuation produced by compartmentalization. (Author)
Angular radiation characteristics of rough surfaces contaminated with fallout simulant by Friedrich Heinrich Karl La Motte-Fouqué( Book )

The unscattered radiation from rough surfaces was measured using a NaI (T) spectrometer. The surfaces were prepared from rocks of graded size and for different spacings between the rocks. Some surfaces were dry and some sticky. Both perpendicular incidence of the contaminant upon the surface and oblique incidence were studied. The effects of thin aluminum sheets overlying activity on a flat smooth surface were also studied. In all cases the reduction in intensity of the primary radiation was measured as a function of angle relative to the normal to the surface. Whether or not a surface was sticky and, if sticky, the angle of incidence of the contaminant upon the surface affected the angular intensity of the radiation markedly. For one sticky surface the activity deposition was studied in detail. The findings together with the angular intensity measurements suggested a new mathematical model to represent sticky surfaces. A series of concentric annular zones on a steel slab were irradiated serially by a fixed, point gamma-ray source. Exposure rate measurements were made behind the barrier along the normal from the source. Next a steel cylindrical partition was placed behind the barrier with its axis normal to the slab. This partition was in contact with the slab and concentric with the source detector axis. Exposure rate measurements along the axis were repeated. The two sets of measurements are presented and compared zone by zone to see what changes were brought about by the insertion of the partition. (Author)

Experimental measurements of specific dose rate were made at 242 stations on six decks of a light aircraft carrier with its Flight Deck "uniformly contaminated" with Co-60. From these data general rules regarding dose distribution were drawn, and the effects of various structural elements were studied. Transmission factors were obtained which agreed fairly well with values computed from earlier data collected with point sources of Co-60. Depth dose measurements at eight locations showed the radiation to maintain its highly penetrating character

Exposure reduction factors were measured inside six compartmented steel structures having different wall thicknesses ranging from 1/4 to 1-1/2 in. These were exposed to radiation from fallout of varying age from three to nine days. Calculations based upon the Nelms-Cooper gamma-ray spectrum at H + 1.12 hours were made for selected compartments in each of the structures following procedures given in the Office of Civil Defense Professional Manual, PM-100-1. Comparison of experiment and calculation reveals a sensitivity to spectral changes and shows that protection is greater during the periods D + 3 to D + 9 days than at H + 1.12 hours. Overall agreement is generally satisfactory. The calculational methods for radiation through floors, however, appear to be inadequate. Spectra measured on site at D + 3 and D + 9 days are given
