Angular radiation characteristics of rough surfaces contaminated with fallout simulant by Friedrich Heinrich Karl La Motte-Fouqué( Book )

The unscattered radiation from rough surfaces was measured using a NaI (T) spectrometer. The surfaces were prepared from rocks of graded size and for different spacings between the rocks. Some surfaces were dry and some sticky. Both perpendicular incidence of the contaminant upon the surface and oblique incidence were studied. The effects of thin aluminum sheets overlying activity on a flat smooth surface were also studied. In all cases the reduction in intensity of the primary radiation was measured as a function of angle relative to the normal to the surface. Whether or not a surface was sticky and, if sticky, the angle of incidence of the contaminant upon the surface affected the angular intensity of the radiation markedly. For one sticky surface the activity deposition was studied in detail. The findings together with the angular intensity measurements suggested a new mathematical model to represent sticky surfaces. Angular distributions and energy spectra of electrons transmitted through and reflected from elemental foils( Book )

Experimental electron energy spectra at various angles of emergence or reflection from foils of carbon, aluminum, copper, silver, and gold were measured. Thicknesses used ranged from 0.2 to 0.6 of the electron range. In all cases the incident radiation was a broad, monodirectional, monenergetic electron beam perpendicular to the foil. Beam energies were 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, and 1.95 MeV. The spectrometer used as anthracene crystal as the detector. (Author)

A series of concentric annular zones on a steel slab were irradiated serially by a fixed, point gamma-ray source. Exposure rate measurements were made behind the barrier along the normal from the source. Next a steel cylindrical partition was placed behind the barrier with its axis normal to the slab. This partition was in contact with the slab and concentric with the source detector axis. Exposure rate measurements along the axis were repeated. The two sets of measurements are presented and compared zone by zone to see what changes were brought about by the insertion of the partition. (Author)
Experimental and calculated estimates of the shielding effectiveness of compartmented structures exposed to fallout by B. W Shumway( )

Exposure reduction factors were measured inside six compartmented steel structures having different wall thicknesses ranging from 1/4 to 1-1/2 in. These were exposed to radiation from fallout of varying age from three to nine days. Calculations based upon the Nelms-Cooper gamma-ray spectrum at H + 1.12 hours were made for selected compartments in each of the structures following procedures given in the Office of Civil Defense Professional Manual, PM-100-1. Comparison of experiment and calculation reveals a sensitivity to spectral changes and shows that protection is greater during the periods D + 3 to D + 9 days than at H + 1.12 hours. Overall agreement is generally satisfactory. The calculational methods for radiation through floors, however, appear to be inadequate. Spectra measured on site at D + 3 and D + 9 days are given
