An experiment l technique is described for directly measuring the agnation point heat tra sfer rate to an aerodynamic model in an electromagnetic shock tube. The application to me suring the reduction in aerodynamic heating by magnetoaerodynamic means is specifically considered. Development of the instrument is discussed, and successful results of preliminary experiments are reported. The technique was found practical for magnetoaerodynamic heat transfer measurements and could be used to study radiative heat tr nsfer from ionized gases. An experimental investigation was made of the effect of an applied magnetic field on the bow shock of a blunt body in hypervelocity air flow. Quantitative measurements of the stand-off distance were made in a three-inch electromagnetic shock tube with free-stream velocities up to 22,000 feet per second. The test body was a hemispherical cylinder containing a coaxial pulsed magnet coil in the nose which produced field strengths at the stagnation point of up to 40 kilogauss. The application of the magnetic field displaced the bow shock upstream and the stand-off distance increased by a factor of 7.5 for the condition, nondimensional parameter = 69. The experimental results were compared with theory and good agreement was obtained within the range of experimental conditions. (Author)

Combined theoretical and experimental investigations were carried out to find the effects of a magnetic field on the shock wave stand-off distance of an unyawed blunt body of revolution. Under the experimental conditions, the stand-off distance was found to increase with increasing field strength. The predicted behavior agreed quite well with the experimental findings

An electromagnetically driven shock tube was studied as a possible new tool for aerodynamic research in which velocities of up to 41,000 feet per second are obtainable in air. At these high velocities stagnation temperatures of about 35,000K are produced. The simple construction and operation of the shock tube is described and an evaluation is made of its performance. The potentialities and limitations of the apparatus are discussed with regards to research applications. The results of some magnetoaerodynamic studies are presented to show the usefulness of this type of shock tube. (Author)
