Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts ruft eine Gräfin aus Böhmen auf Veranlassung des Ortspfarrers einen Inquisitor, um vermeintliche Hexerei zu bekämpfen. Der eitle und besitzgierige Inquisitor weitet seine Herrschaft immer mehr aus und geht schließlich auch gegen jene vor, die ihn riefen. Verfilmung eines Romans über die letzten Hexenprozesse in den Jahren 1678-1695 in Böhmen. Dem sehr sorgfältig gestalteten Film geht es mehr um die Schilderung der Zerstörung von Menschlichkeit als um Schock- und Thrillereffekte. Seine kritische Darstellung refelektiert die jüngere Geschichte der CSSR (Stalins Säuberungen 1951, Slansky-Prozeß)
