<<Abraxas>> war der erste Höhepunkt in der Geschichte eines jungen Mexikaners, die mit einer Faszination für die amerikanischen Blues-Legenden begann. 1961 reiste Carlos Santana ohne Dokumente in die USA ein. Vom Tellerwäscher avancierte er 1966 als 19-Jähriger zum Kopf der <<Santana Blues Band>>. -- Aber im musikalisch und gesellschaftlich experimentellen Klima im San Francisco der späten 60er Jahre wuchs Santanas Musik rasch über stilistische Grenzen hinaus - nicht zuletzt auch aus der Erkenntnis, dass lateinamerikanische Perkussion die Frauen im Publikum zum wildem Hüftschwung animierte. -- Santanas grosser Durchbruch kam 1969 - noch vor Veröffentlichung ihres Debuts - mit ihrem Auftritt am Woodstock -Festival. Mit <<Abraxas>> im Jahr darauf gelang der Band der perfekte Mix ihrer unorthodoxen Fusion von Rock, Jazz, Salsa, Mambo, Blues und einer Prise Spiritualismus. <<Abraxas>> erreichte Platz 1 in den USA und verkaufte sich über fünf Millionen Mal. -- Eigentlich erstaunlich für ein Album, das zu mehr als der Hälfte aus Instrumental-Nummern bestand, allen voran <<Samba Pa Ti>>. Der Schlüssel dazu ist Carlos Santanas unverwechselbare Gitarren-Handschrift - vom ersten Ton an. Dazu die Hits <<Black Magic Woman>> und <<Oye Como Va>> und eine spannende Balance zwischen Improvisation, Überraschung und klaren Songstrukturen. -- Der Pionier des Latin Rock kann auch heute, 37 Jahre später - mit 60 - stolz auf seine frühe Meisterleistung sein! Mit ihrem Erstling <<Licensed To Ill>> waren die Beastie Boys nicht nur die erste erfolgreiche weisse Rap-Gruppierung - sie landeten gleich auch das erste Nummer-1-Album in der Geschichte des HipHop. -- Das New Yorker Trio kam ursprünglich aus der Punk-Szene, war aber von Anfang an geprägt von der Liebe zum schwarzen Funk von Sly and The Family Stone und The Meters. Produzent Rick Rubin holte die Beasties 1985 zum eben gegründeten Label <<Def Jam>>, wo bereits LL Cool J und bald auch Public Enemy unter Vertrag standen. -- Obwohl Run-DMC mit <<Walk This Way>> bereits eine Bresche geschlagen hatten, sorgte die Mischung aus Heavy Metal und Rap auf <<Licensed To Ill>> für Kontroversen. Erst recht in Verbindung mit den frechen Texten, deren Humor nicht überall richtig verstanden wurde! -- Trotzdem: <<Fight For Your Right>> wurde zur ultimativen Party-Hymne, <<No Sleep Till Brooklyn>> zum Motto einer Generation die den Begriff <<Crossover>> erst noch erfinden musste. Drei Jahre später, nach der Trennung von Rubin, bewiesen die Beasties mit ihrem zweiten Album <<Paul's Boutique>>, dass sie keine Eintagsfliegen waren.
