Robert Rauschenberg : combines by Robert Rauschenberg ( Book )
10 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 800 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
With these mixed-media works of art, Rauschenberg reinvented collage, changing it from a medium that presses commonplace materials to serve illusion into something very different: a process that undermines both illusion and the idea that a work of art has a unitary meaning. Appearing as either wall-hung works or as freestanding objects, the combines are composed as syncopated grids that draw on materials from everyday life and the history of art. - Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book focuses on the works created roughly between 1954 and 1964, the most important decade in the artist's 50-year career, and constitutes the most complete survey of the Combines ever presented, as well as the most rigorous analysis of their political, social, autobiographical, and aesthetic significance. An introductory essay by exhibition curator Paul Schimmel titled "Reading Rauschenberg" offers an iconographic analysis of the earlier Combines, based on in-depth conversations with the artist. Other texts help to contextualize the Combines, such as Thomas Crow's essay that calls them the major artistic statement of their time. - Publisher

The book is the most complete monograph of artist Orozco (b.Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico,1962) published to date, covering his career with a selection of his most representative works from the late 1980's to the present. Contents include essays by art historians Yve-Alain Bois and Benjamin H. D. Buchloh and a long interview by Briony Fer, where the artist shares his motivations and thoughts regarding conceptual art, culture and the philosophy behind his work. Benjamin H.D. Buchloh refers to the different forms of sculpture during the 20th century and the culture of market economy and their manifestations since the transformations to object-subject. Finally Yve-Alain Bois explores the recent return to painting of Orozco critically analyzing the formal and structural logic of his canvas. With a nomadic lifestyle and a permanent changing and varied artistic practice that includes sculpture, drawing, photography, installation, collage, painting and video, noted Orozco is an artist that defies any categorization
