Nel Brasile del 1970 che si prepara a vivere l’emozione del mondiale messicano, Mauro, un ragazzino di dodici anni, è costretto a trasferirsi dal nonno a San Paolo perché i suoi genitori, attivisti politici osteggiati dalla dittatura, devono prendersi una “vacanza” dal regime. Lasciato in tutta fretta davanti al condominio del nonno che si trova nel quartiere multietnico di Bom Retiro, Mauro scopre ben presto che quest’ultimo è morto d’infarto poche ore prima del suo arrivo. Il vicino di casa Shlomo, un anziano ebreo praticante, seppur riluttante accoglie il ragazzo e si occupa delle sue esigenze primarie. Mauro, che attende con ansia accanto al telefono notizie dai suoi genitori, assiste dalla finestra ai giochi dei ragazzini del quartiere e fa amicizia con Hanna che abita nello stesso palazzo. Mentre il percorso della nazionale brasiliana nei campionati di calcio promette di essere lungo, Mauro comincia ad uscire di casa sempre più spesso per frequentare i suoi coetanei. Intanto Shlomo fa di tutto per cercare informazioni sui suoi genitori, coinvolgendo in particolare Italo, uno studente che fa parte del movimento clandestino comunista. Le strette maglie del regime però portano prima all’irruzione della polizia all’interno dell’università, cui Italo riesce a fuggire, poi all’arresto dello stesso Shlomo sospettato di essere un sostenitore del movimento. Chiarita la propria posizione, l’anziano viene rilasciato e riesce in qualche modo a rintracciare la madre di Mauro, mentre la sorte del padre rimane ignota. In tutta la nazione impazzano i festeggiamenti perché il Brasile, battendo in finale l’Italia, ha conquistato la sua terza coppa del mondo, e Mauro parte con la madre verso una destinazione ignota per cominciare la sua nuova vita da esiliato
