Brooklyn based artist Vik Muniz grew up poor in Brazil. This film follows him as he returns to Rio de Janeiro, specifically to Jardim Gramacho, or "Garbage Garden." The world's largest landfill, it receives 7,000 tons daily, an astonishing 70% of all Rio's garbage. "We are not pickers of garbage; we are pickers of recyclable materials," says Tião, a catadore, or trash picker who thinks of himself and his fellows as environmentalists. The pickers have a union, which has built a recycling center, medical clinic, day care and skills-training centers, and community lending library of discarded books for their members. Muniz photographs a number of the pickers, reworks the photographs with garbage, and auctions several in London. Believing in the transformative power of art, Muniz donates the proceeds to the pickers who posed, in recognition of their lives, in honor of the dignity of their work

The crash reel : the fall and rise of snowboarder Kevin Pearce ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This eye-popping film, stunningly edited from 20 years of verité footage, follows champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce and exposes the fatal allure of extreme sports. An escalating rivalry between Kevin and his nemesis Shaun White (2-time Olympic Gold Medalist) in the run-up to the 2010 Olympics culminates in Shaun winning Gold and Kevin in a life-threatening coma following a training accident. Kevin's family help him rebuild his life as a traumatic brain injury survivor, but when he insists he wants to return to the sport that has caused him so much pain, his eloquent brother David, who has Down's syndrome, intervenes. As an elite athlete, Kevin was a professional risk-taker but now his skills are impaired and a small blow to the head could kill him. How much risk is too much? Featuring a stellar soundtrack, with songs by Moby, Sigur Ros, The Chemical Brothers, M83 and Jose Gonzalez, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lucy Walker uses Crash Reel to bring to audiences across an epic and true story or rivalry, the hard facts of life and ultimately, the value of family. We also celebrate Sarah Burke who crashed in Park City and died January 19, 2012
