Portraiture in Paris around 1800 : Cooper Penrose by Jacques-Louis David by Philippe Bordes ( Book )
9 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Focusing on portrait painting in Paris during the Consulate (November 1799 to May 1804), this book explores the contextual nexus in which the Portrait of Cooper Penrose was created. Philippe Bordes considers how this picture relates to other works painted by David during this period and to portraits painted by the artist's contemporaries, and also explores the political and social consequences of David's attitude to Bonaparte, the artist's relations with his clients, and the state of his family finances during this period. This investigation of the Portrait of Cooper Penrose constitutes the most complete analysis of the picture ever undertaken. Bordes proposes that Penrose selected David as his portraitist not only because of his international renown as an artist, but also because of his reputation as a Revolutionary."--Amazon

Représenter la Révolution : les Dix-Août de François Gérard et de Jacques Bertaux by Philippe Bordes ( Book )
10 editions published in 2010 in French and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
P. [4] of cover

3 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The thesis aims to contribute to the knowledge of aesthetic mutations in french art from the Revolution to the July Monarchy through the study of the painter Pierre-Narcisse Guérin's work and career. His activity begins in the troubled politic context of French Revolution and cross seven different regimes during which he will have successively artistic and institutional careers. He stands out in the artistic sphere of Consulate as the model of liberal painter, and from the Empire, distinguish himself both as the master of the new generation of painters (Géricault, Delacroix, Scheffer... ) and as an institutional agent of Fine Arts. Surpassed by the reputation of his pupils, neither his action nor his work has been valuated until nowadays. This first monography includes questions such as social status of the artist, links between art and politics, artistic pedagogy, tensions between academism and artistic independence at the beginning of the nineteenth century
